So, you are the governor of Florida. You want to punish Disney for their stance on pending state legislation. Do you:

a) close tax loopholes which benefit Disney, but also benefit other wealthy corporate interests in the state
b) give Disney a billion dollar handout by dissolving their privately held government entity that provides social services, effectively taking the debt off Disney's books, and foist the debt off on local municipalities?

The net annual profit from such an effective writedown is probably a "mere" 40-50 million a year, which is something of a drop in the bucket for a corporation raking in over a billion last year. Orange County taxpayers, by contrast, would feel it.
Isn't this related to new legislation which prohibits teachers mentioning gays, trans etc in case it "damages the children".
Guns are ok though. We'll allow them, but mentioning that gay people exist - nope, can't have that.

Politico has obtained a SCOTUS majority draft opinion authored by Samuel Alito that would overturn Roe v Wade. If this is the final decision, in many of the newly Theocratic States of America abortion would immediately become a criminal offense.
...and there goes stare decisis.

We should start a thread on what the Thomas Court is coming for next. This will be the inverse of the Warren Court of the 1960s, except they'll be meeting in the senior Associate Justice's chambers rather than those of the Chief.

Yes, the law prohibits teachers from directly teaching from the classroom kids under 7 years of age about sexuality. Honestly, 5 years ago if you wanted to tell a 6 year old about sex you would have been called a pervert and a danger.

Had a conversation with a neighbor earlier. Our kids grew up together and we've remained friends despite her knee-jerk Christofascist politics. Not surprisingly, she is supportive of this opinion. When I noted the philosophic underpinning of this decision could be used to outlaw interracial marriages like hers and like mine, her only retort was... if it ends abortion it's worth it.

Can you imagine?

As far as the Federalist Society crowd is concerned, stare decisis is nothing more than a quaint notion that gets lip service. Money = speech. The entire history of Second Amendment law was wrong and a wholly late 20th Century view of the original text is now predominant. And on and on...

It's not that much related to gay but things like gender identity and not teaching it to young kids.

The don't say gay is the trendy name given to it.

Fun fact, in the same state, they don't teach sex education until much later in the education system. Seems nobody is mentioning that part.

So effectively it's don't teach young kids about gender identity years before you teach them what sex actually is. One thing is for sure, it's not portrayed by the media accurately. Many little facts excluded to make it seem far worse than what it is, what many people would actually agree with

Yeah, I'm sure it is much more nuanced than the headlines suggest.

I would still rather the legislators put the same amount of effort into stopping the kids getting shot though.
