Current Affairs General US politics (ie, not POTUS related)

My father died the day before Hurricane Harvey hit my hometown of Houston. We had to make all arrangements, gather valuables, lift as high as possible any furniture we left behind and shuttle my poor Mother to Austin to beat the storm. She remained in Austin with my sister for 3 weeks waiting for the floodwaters to subside. Hundreds of thousands of people in Houston/Harris County lost everything.

My family helped get George Bush elected to office as a US Rep from Houston and aided his political career. He and Barbara were to attend my parents' wedding and my mother still has the telegram from GWB expressing condolences at last minute call back to DC preventing them from being able to do so. Barbara called my grandmother with condolences when my grandfather died.

I disagreed vehemently with George, Sr and George, the lesser on politics. George P. Bush can go [Poor language removed] himself sideways.

There is no longer any reason to try to “understand” these people. Nor should there be any compunction about doing whatever we can to read them out of American politics, because they clearly have opted out on their own. They should be considered anathema, as should the entire Republican Party and the modern conservative movement that animates it. Anything that can be done without including them should be done for the good—to say nothing of the sanity—of the country. Raw political power should be used to push through whatever of this administration’s policy priorities can be passed without any Republican help whatsoever. Majoritarianism should be invoked without mercy, and by whatever legitimate means necessary, and the window of opportunity to do that is closing fast.

It doesn’t matter if 53 percent of them say they believe the former president* is still the president* because they actually believe it, or they say it because it makes them one of The Elect. The effect on democracy is the same. They are poison in the bloodstream. And they’re proud of it.

Interesting life story.

As an aside, I didn't even know there was a George P. Bush.

Which is why our Lege is passing bills to limit abortion, allow for open carry of handguns and to ban Critical Race Theory in schools.

Anything to change the subject and the "Kulchure War" does the trick every time with the GQP base.
To continue the theme, the Lege has passed the "Star Spangled Banner Protection Act" which requires all professional sports teams in Texas to play the national anthem prior to each game under penalty of fine and/or loss of local or state subsidy.

I wonder just how many of these knuckleheads know that pro sports teams in the United States got along just fine, there was no loss of patriotism in the country without but occasional playing of the anthem at events until the 1940s and 50s. But, who cares? If what we do today riles up or tickles the fancy of the GQP zombies well that's just fine and dandy.
