Texas' Attorney General, Ken Paxton, has been under indictment for securities fraud since 2015 and is under investigation by the FBI for influence peddling and violation of whistleblower protections while serving as AG. Meantime, in 4 months since the November election, he burned 22,000 hours of AG office employee time investigating voter fraud. Conservatively, this endeavor cost the taxpayers of the state $2.2 million in pay + benefits alone. Here's what they found:

16 instances of potential voter address irregularities on registration forms. Over $2 million to find sixteen individual registration forms with irregular addresses - not necessarily incorrect. Just irregular. Theoretically, this could mean a voter lives on Everton St but the registrar wrote Eberton St.

16 instances.

There are 17,000,000 registered voters in this state.

OK Dems, Biden really wants that covid bill, its not the best bill but it will help people out tremendously in the short run so yea go ahead and get that done.

$15 minimum wage, yea it was never gonna be that easy w/ o w/o a filibuster. After all congress is so horrible that Ted Cruz isn't even the worst senator. That being said, you've only had control for about 45 days and made a effort, good job Dems! Plus there was never a vote on raising the minimum wage in years so now at least you know where everyone currently stands.

Now the big difference between the republicians and democrats is that the Republicians take what they can get when they can, are never satisfied and immediately come back for more. The Dems, "we asked and they said no, oh well, moving on!" The Dems are really good at making their own voters/supporters of an issue believe "hey maybe all that talk was just lip service". End this, its gonna take a lot of work, hitting the airwaves, arm twisting and campaigning to even get something like $12/hr or $12 w/ a yearly cost of living adjustment. And you know what, it still might amount to little to nothing because you are trying to negotitate w/ Vanilla ISIS. But your voters and supporters of the issue (64% from the last poll if you believe it) will know you kept your promise and that matters.

IMO if we could get $12 in a compromise take it but continue that fight for what you campaigned on.

I’m late to the party but curious what the group’s thoughts here are, as I don’t think I’ve seen much debate about minimum wage increase having unintended consequences. Of course there would be a variance in results but what would the plan be to offset the lost jobs? We would seemingly elevate some and hurt others.

The good: millions of people in generally poor Trumpy areas will have more purchasing power. They'll still be crazy poor so the money will immediately circulate back into the generally economy.

The bad: your diarrhea burrito will cost an extra .50 at taco bell. you might have to choose between that chlupa or staying at home and eating something healthier, like a jar of mayo.

Any thoughts on actually responding to the findings on jobs being lost? Whats the counterbalance argument? It’s still fine to think the good outweighs the bad if that’s your stance but let’s not pretend it’s all good or all bad in any case. Again, this wouldn’t be 100% accurate of course but it’s the CBO that published the findings, not some partisan agency.

“The report expects that of the 1.4 million workers displaced by the higher wages, half would fall out of the labor force completely by 2025.

"Young, less educated people would account for a disproportionate share of those reductions in employment," the report said.”

Infested with religious nutters.

Classifying abortion as homicide was a bill introduced last session and it went nowhere. These things grab headlines for the GOP with the Evangelical and conservative Catholic crowd (their base) but aren't going to, or even expected to, pass into law.

Buggers me. This crowd is willing to have the state force a woman to carry a child to term and be responsible for that child for 18 years but isn't OK with the state mandating the temporary wearing of a mask in public to protect other people's children.

Fits pretty neatly into the Republican definition of “pro-life” which appears to be forcing the fetus out of the birth canal at all costs, and from that moment forward never giving a **** about it again.
