One of my biggest takeaways from the past few days/weeks/months is seeing how truly appalling many Americans basic knowledge of civics is. That’s not any comment on people posting in here. Many of you guys aren’t American, yet somehow seem to know far more than the run of the mill citizen here.

It’s shocking for grown Americans not to understand simple things like the impeachment process, or the difference between “Capitol” and “capital”. We have to do a much better job of actually educating young people in this country ABOUT this country.

I think active posters on this forum in US related threads are going to on average have more an active interest in, and possibly therefore understanding of, US politics and civic society in general.

Trust me, the majority of people in the UK have no idea how our Government actually works.

Agree completely. I’m just saying if we’re going to continue along a road in which every person’s vote technically counts the same (it doesn’t, but I’ll digress), we need to prioritize raising the baseline level of civic understanding in our citizens.

On a similar note we unfortunately now live in a World where every moron with access to social media thinks their "opinion" is worth the same as anyone else, and these people can cluster in to self reinforcing, easily manipulated, conspiracy ridden, authoritarian, loony fascist social media bubbles, with real World consequences (as yes, these people also get to vote).
