There has been a huge upswing in racism in our country, driven by right/far right sources (including our racist president). Some of this stuff I follow quite closely if it falls in the category of "scientific racism" (sometimes known as "highbrow alt-right"). The message between basic low-bow racists and "high-brow" racists is the same: these racists seek ways to diminish those with non-white skin. In the scientific racism circles a major talking point is that there are genuine IQ differences among whites and blacks. The difference in IQ scores among these groups in the USA is moderate to wide, though narrowing, but the racist explanation is that this difference is due to genetic and constitutional differences among blacks and whites, which is unsubstantiated and false. More simply, it is convenient for high-brow racists to proclaim that genetic differences underlie racial differences in socioeconomic achievement because then one can (falsely) absolve oneself of being racist--"it's not me, it's just genetics!" when in fact one is promoting bunk science to justify one's racist views. The differences are largely due to infrastructural inequality and structural racism. For example, lead paint was/is an inner city problem more than a suburb/rural one and guess where many non-whites live...urban environments. Lead has major negative effects on cognitive performance. This paper posted below is frankly mind-blowing in its implications for understanding crime, cognitive differences among different socioeconomic classes (which often correlates with white/black populations), and opportunity.

And in another study, installing air filters had a major influence on increasing test scores. Guess which schools are more likely to install air filters, urban underfunded schools that contain a large proportion of nonwhites or private white schools?...go on guess...it's a real toughy.

NC Legislature is a nightmare.
First the House antics as above, now this

We will not have a new budget this year...so no cost of living raise for me...again.

The idea that saying present isn't the same as abstaining is so weird to me. If there are 100 people asked about something and then say they are simply there, it should be majority of the 90 remaining. If 50 say they are simply there, it should be majority of the remaining 50.

It isn't about about an abstain vs present vote. GOP isn't even holding the vote.

The GOP senate are trying to override the Dem governors veto of the budget. GOP are the majority, but no longer a super majority. They don't have the margin of votes they need to get the override if all Dem senators are present to vote. They want to do what the House did and hold a vote when Dems aren't around to even get to vote.
