General strike/protest

I do believe that as far as I can remember, these strikes will be least about the wellbeing of teachers themselves and more to do with the future of how education looks in this country. This is all about the future of children. That is why we are teachers.

@peteblue They are doing away with parent Governors for a reason. Do you think parents will take that positively?

I was a parent governor, many years ago granted, and I found that I was spending all my time writing health and safety procedures and procedures for exclusion etc etc. We had some involvement, minor, in school expenditure because 98% of the finance was taken up with staff salaries which was undertaken by the Local Council. We also had an input in respect of the appointment of the Head Teacher, which was then overridden. Some of the parent governors got elected but never bothered turning up. It was a great idea, but in my limited experience didn't really work, and some of us really tried....

Mate, shhh. Can you pipe down and wait for a real teacher like Clint to get here and tell us how it really is.

I can see how that would be the case in all honest. However, I've known them to be gateways for parents to voice their opinions on schools. The decision to not allow parents to be governors removes any hope parents ever had at getting their voice heard in a school.

At the risk of repeating what has been said in this thread several times already - because they are professionals in the field.

It's like saying why would anyone listen to junior doctors if they don't have the support of the patients (although I recall that you are against junior doctors striking as well), or why would anyone listen to lawyers protesting legal aid cuts without the support of their clients.

Different points. I am against Doctors going on strike because it effects the wellbeing of people who are I'll. I have no problem with teachers going on strike because no one will die as a result. The Doctors, if they lose support of the patients and public will lose, as will the teachers. The Lawyers are universally hated anyway, they have no interest in anyone else apart from their profession, and would be missed by no one if they went on strike.......

I agree tbh, even though it was frustrating. But in that case demand that parent governors are retained. I'd rather see a well argued case of what we do need and want rather than this is what we are against.......

Die, probably not. Lose a month of important education? Yep.

In a system already kind of slowish (sorry teachers, but I'm sticking to my guns from the rant-post; plus even if it wasn't, this will still stand -> ) - you don't want any more hindrances. Imagine your kid is just about to go into uni, and there's no one there to help him/her with the final project, he/she cocks it up, ends up having to essentially repeat the year. All because of said protest. Or parents having to, GASP, look after their kids, like...

I'd say it's (in my opinion and as I've gone through it) in the people's favour to not have a teacher strike.

Agreed on lawyers though lol

So does that make them fair game for any type of radical change to their employment contracts, with no recourse?

I'll add lawyers to the long list of professionals you seemingly despise, but actually, the point I raised about campaigning for legal aid cuts did result in a U-turn by the government and was campaigned for by those lawyers who are the least well paid and most honourable in the profession (legal aid defendant solicitors).
