Gary Speed found dead

This hasn't sunk in yet. You'd think for a bloke who I never knew personally and whose only real attachment was that he played for the football team I support, I wouldn't be too distraught about it but this really has knocked me for six. Can't get my head around it.

Of course, thoughts are with his family and friends at what must be an unbelievably distressing time.

RIP Gary. Gentlemen. Legend.

January 2011.

Speed's father and, indeed, his older son are Liverpool fans, but growing up in north Wales his best friend was John Ratcliffe, cousin of the Everton captain Kevin. So Everton it was, and Everton it has remained, even though his own two-year stint at Goodison Park came to an acrimonious end in 1998.

"There's nothing to say, really," says Speed, when I dredge up the circumstances of his departure, which have long intrigued conspiracy theorists among the Goodison faithful. "I signed a confidentiality clause when I left, and anyway I'm an Evertonian so I would never say bad things about the club. Newcastle came in for me, I wanted to go, and that's all there is to it. I couldn't blame the fans [for booing him when he returned in opposition colours] because they didn't know why I left, but they're great with me now when I go back."

Important bits highlighted right there.

Let no bluenose forget that this was one of our own.

nice to see you back lad ,shame about the circumstances

I feel that Azzurri with post #30 has got it right with the reason Gary Speed left us. Perhaps even in those days his professionalism was dictating his career.
Regrettably though, other players just as good as Gary Speed have left us, and susequently faced the wrath of Evertonians for 'daring' to turn their back on the Blues .... remember he refused to play in a match at West Ham just before he was sold to Newcastle.
Having said that, it is desperately sad to hear of his untimely death at such a young age and surely with a long career in management still ahead of him .... who knows he may have eventually sat in the Manager's seat at Goodison, but that's something we will never know now.
I have no doubt though that all Evertonians, no matter what their attitude was towards Gary Speed for leaving the way he did, will show the proper respect to AN EVERTONIAN .... a Blue just like us.
R.I.P GARY SPEED
He didnt refuse to play against West Ham. He was told by the club not to turn up for the coach. It was then "leaked" to the press that he refused to travel. The club were making trouble so they could cash in on him.
Got this from Gary himself when i met him.
