Gary Speed found dead

For me there's nothing better than when one of the chosen actually gets to pull on the shirt, let alone goes on to captain the Toffees. His career with us was too short, and now his life. This is appalling news for football. I fully hope Goodison packs to the rafters and gives this true football legend the ovation he deserves next weekend. Anyone who doesn't respect this man, and what he's done for the game doesn't deserve to set foot inside Goodison Park ever again. Let's stand together next week and respect THE Gary Speed.

^^^This so very much this.

Oh how I would've loved to be at Goodison next weekend to show my respect to a fellow chosen one.

Desperate news. RIP Gary.
Tears shed in our house. My son Dan and I were only talking about him yesterday at Bolton. We were watching how the Everton mascot was virtually left to fend for himself during the pre match warm up and was only belatedly made part of the proceedings by Jags just before the toss.
On January 10 1998 Dan was Everton mascot at Selhurst and Gary was captain. Despite all the other responsibilities of the day he treated Dan like he was almost part of the team, ensuring that he met all of his idols and making sure that a couple of the other players (Craig Short and Thomas Myrhe) kept him involved during the warm up. He walked up to the toss with his arm around Dans shoulders and to me Dan seemed to grow to about six feet tall. We have a framed photo of the day with Gary and Dan together in our house and Dan still thinks of it as one of the best days of his life. Everton won 3-1, the only time I have ever walked away from a Palace home defeat with a huge smile on my face. Won't be smiling for a while now.
My thoughts to his family at this terrible time.

Rip efc legend....
I only hope that fans show respect next weekend for both him and his family!!
He had his reasons for why he left the club he loved and in keepin quiet has protected the clubs honour and name!!
RIP Gary

BBC 5 live just read statements from Leeds, Newcastle and Bolton. No Everton statement. Very sad, seeing as he played for us as was one of us.

I just don't understand how he could take his own life??? RIP Gary. I'm literally sick to my stomach right now.

I feel that Azzurri with post #30 has got it right with the reason Gary Speed left us. Perhaps even in those days his professionalism was dictating his career.
Regrettably though, other players just as good as Gary Speed have left us, and susequently faced the wrath of Evertonians for 'daring' to turn their back on the Blues .... remember he refused to play in a match at West Ham just before he was sold to Newcastle.
Having said that, it is desperately sad to hear of his untimely death at such a young age and surely with a long career in management still ahead of him .... who knows he may have eventually sat in the Manager's seat at Goodison, but that's something we will never know now.
I have no doubt though that all Evertonians, no matter what their attitude was towards Gary Speed for leaving the way he did, will show the proper respect to AN EVERTONIAN .... a Blue just like us.
R.I.P GARY SPEED
