Martinez: Barry's Influence Crucial

Roberto Martinez says Gareth Barry’s understated role as midfield anchorman has been one of the key reasons why Everton’s attacking players have flourished this season.

In the Premier League, no team has plundered more goals from open play than Everton’s total of 24.

Romelu Lukaku has been averaging better than one every two games in all competitions, with a tally of 11 from 18 appearances.

Ross Barkley has six to his name, while Arouna Kone has registered a healthy return of five.

This prolific form has been largely down to the balance offered by Barry’s ‘know-how’, according to Martinez.

The stand-in skipper delivered a defensive midfield masterclass against Aston Villa, covering more ground than anyone else in the English top-flight last Saturday.

“Gareth has taken over the armband and has given a really calm feeling about our performances,” Martinez said. “He never panics and for our young players that’s very important.

“Once you get to know Gareth inside out, [you realise] that he is the most consistent footballer you are going to get in a dressing room. That’s down to his character.

“I’ve said it many times - I always feel safe and confident of giving young players an opportunity because I know there are players like Gareth Barry, with know-how and experience, in the side.”

With regular skipper Phil Jagielka recovering from a knee injury, Barry has worn the captain’s armband in Everton’s last three Premier League fixtures.

Martinez has explained why the 34-year-old was the ideal outfield choice to take over the responsibly of leading the team.

“He [Barry] is a player that I would love every single young player to learn from,” added the manager. “Everything starts from his focus and mentality.

“You need to understand that any team that goes on the pitch needs to have direction. If you are a younger player, you are relying on someone else’s experience.

Gareth Barry and Tim Howard have been so influential in that respect.”

I don't believe he ran 8km on Sat. I don't care if they are official measured statistics, no way did he run more than any other player this season.

Why? What was he doing, we passed the ball around leisurely among ourselves at the back and then got it forward and attacked loads.

Was he just trying to keep warm or something, or had he been on the red bull before the game?

Proper mad how he's gone from a winger to a left-back to the English Busquets.

I vividly remember him starting out at Villa.

They played a 3-5-2 under John Gregory at the time and they signed Dave Unsworth to play on the left side of the back 3. Unsworth changed his mind and joined us from Villa a couple of days after they signed him. Instead of going out and buying another defender, they gave Gareth Barry a shot and he played most of his first couple of seasons as a left-sided centre back in a back 3

He'd make an amazing male underwear model, not only does he have a chiseled jawline but that ability to pose looking into the far distance is an important skill if there are other half-undressed men around you.
