To be honest I wouldn't be keen on us offering him a 3 year deal. Surely we've moved on from the days of having a 36 year old player as one of our top earners? It would seem a bit desperate and doesn't really indicate long term planning in my mind. But obviously it needs sorting and Barry holds all the aces on this hand.
Mate, he's a brilliant player. Pivotal. Chelsa only just released Lampard who is older, this is a team who won Champs League 2012, Europa League 2013, semifinals this year and he's been a vital cog, lessening importance on the pitch but no doubt still influential off in and a match winner when he comes on.
Barry is a far more accomplished holding player than Lampard, a role which is much easier on the legs if you have the intelligence to match, which Barry does. He will be fine for at least the next 2 years I would imagine. Martinez being a physio - not to mention the extensive sports science team we have - will have done detailed assessment on his capabilities in terms of playing years. If you want to go further with the career analogies, Martinez with his masters in Business Management, just think of the appreciation of due diligence he's got. Do you think he would throw down £60k a week for 3 years if he wasn't certain it would represent the best deal for Everton?
The difference from now and Walter is stark for many reasons: those players were has-beens no matter what their age, some rocked up at 29/30 legs already gone; I'm fairly certain the sophistication in sports science and so on has moved on light years; the powers of analysis are greatly enhanced by all the teams of backroom staff and information available to the manager and more importantly, lest we forget, think of who that manager is: Roberto Martinez. Not dissapointed Walter Smith, but triumphant Roberto Martinez. This is a man who publically extols the virtues of pragmatism and conservatism when it comes to finance: I'm merely the custodian of Everton, he says. And rightly so.
If there were anyone I'd trust with a £10m decision on a 33 year old, it'd be our current manager.
