If they had kept the whole realism aspect going, I’d probably still love it regardless of who lived and died. As @mikeh72 pointed out earlier plot armor kind of ruined the show.

It would be fitting if the show ends with the white walkers killing everyone. It‘ll never happen, but it would put the whole pointless bickering over the crown into perspective. The original angle of the series would hit home.

Watched the 7 series over Xmas with my missus, as she hadn’t seen them before. Made up I did, there was so much I’d missed first time round. Looking forward to the new series.

Maybe I should do this.

I think it's better to binge watch, in all honesty.

I'm flying to New Zealand in a few weeks, so saving all the new True Detective eps for the flight (it should be about 7 eps in by the time I go).

It’s worth it if you have the time, I had a few weeks off over Christmas and my missus is on maternity leave so it worked out well.

They were really trying to make Brianne’s character stand out, but if I’m being honest she is just as dull as Jonny boy. And her “slaying” of an unarmed Stannis put a bad taste in my mouth as well. It was a poor way to write him off.

He was unarmed but he was being executed for the murder of his younger brother (Can't remember his name!) so there wasn't supposed to be any grandstanding or ceremony involved. He knew he was a busted flush, had lost his faith and his followers. He was full of regret and self-doubt so just told Brienne to do her duty and spare him any speeches or pomposity.

I'm a Stannis The Mannis fanboy but I get the low-key death. That's just the way it goes sometimes, out with a whimper instead of a bang.

The show went downhill when they brought the worst actor and character back to life. You have no idea how ecstatic I was when he died. Now it is fanfiction trash that I will watch anyways because I’ve already invested too much time to give up on it now.

Agree with all this except to be fair it's very well-made trash. GOT remains a 9/10 series. If it royally bums up the final season then it drops to 8/10 like Lost did.

Theres always opinions but If you think Game of Thrones is trash then you should stay away from Television before you hurt yourself.

my better-looking half thinks it's actual trash, she gave up halfway through season 1 and wasn't impressed when i made her watch the final two Season 5 eps. She's got good taste in fantastic telly (Twin Peaks, BSG) but has no time for any Star Treks or GoT which are arguably a little less mature.

This really is a dead topic, isn't it?

The show was utterly fantastic in the first three or four seasons, but as soon they started deviating noticeably from the source material the quality of storytelling and plot progression really suffered. Everyone knows this.

It was crystal clear by the time they were halfway through season three that they REALLY needed to slow down, make the episodes longer and ideally have more per season. Start of season four should have heralded a new format: 100 mins per show, 14 shows per season. They then should have resisted the egotistical urge to race ahead of GRRM and just stuck faithfully to the source material - they simply don't write anywhere near as well as he does. Everyone knows this.

The utter hash they made of the Dorne plot, the ridiculous decision to kill off Barristan Selmy, the pointless truncation of the Blackfish / House Tully / Riverlands arc, the mindless re-writing of Stannis' character and relationship with his daughter, and the utter Hollywood cliche set-piece pap that was the Battle of the Bastards... Good Lord. Snappy dialogue for Tormund, Davos, Bronn and Tyrion doesn't make up for this. The dark turn Arya's character has taken (whilst intriguing and welcome) doesn't make up for this.

Overall I like the show, and re-watch it every so often. It's painfully clear what has caused the drop in quality however, and where/ when it takes place. And everyone knows it.
