thats the same point I dropped off, I think losing the brilliant Dillane as stannis in such a strange set up took away my enthusiam, amongst other changes in the writing and feel of the show
They were really trying to make Brianne’s character stand out, but if I’m being honest she is just as dull as Jonny boy. And her “slaying” of an unarmed Stannis put a bad taste in my mouth as well. It was a poor way to write him off.
so much about that character they clearly misinterpreted from the books, and they had the perfect actor. I'm not totally anti-show, theres things they have actually done better than the books such as the relationship between arya and Tywin or the hound, among st other real high points, making Ned a stronger fighter was a good decision, as was keeping Beric over lady stoneheart. But I agree with yourself since they went beyond that lazy whoppers source material it's strayed into a fan pleasing hollywood style. The whole point of Brianne was to magnify the hopelessness of war, in the show she ticks off quests like an asda shopping list
If you look at the credits there are certain show writers/runners that are the worst culprits ignoring the shows own logic with character assassination everywhere. I wince at the sight of Dave hills name in the credits ie the scene were they cut from Brienne to Jamie wistfully staring at an island asking if it was tarth, clever lad Dave. Only it's estermont that Jamie has visited multiple times previously and first rammed his sister on, key plot, so yeah great writing.
He should have handed it on to someone else by now as he's miles beyond CBA with it - Brandon Sanderson did a superior job to Robert Jordan in finishing Wheel of Time (AFAIK, not read it) and Jordan wasn't around to give him direction. Get someone young and good on board as a co-writer - GRRM can sit on the couch like Barbara Cartland, dictating ideas, while someone else actually puts pen to paper and gets them written up.
It's a little sad that Roy doltrice won't get to finish doing the audio books
