Game Of Thrones: Season 8

I'm still struggling to understand why they made such a big deal out of the Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen theme at the end of the last season, only for it to fizzle out in season 8. And many thing like that seemed to happen.
To keep people guessing i suppose. Red herring call over the shop to make the ending less predictable and less Hollywood.

I get why people weren't happy with the lack of subtlety of the last season - however things were naturally coming to a head, and there's no place for subtlety then.

What always made got so good is that it wasn't always a dull predictable Hollywood happy ending. Likeable characters git knocked off here there and everywhere. In the end, people weren't satisfied that Jon wasn't king, or Dany didn't turn out to be a wonderful queen etc. But this is exactly the sort of unpredictable plot twist and turn that made the series so good.

There were plenty of disappointing compromised for the sake if special effects, and those with an interest in military tactics like myself will have been laughing at the script writers efforts at how they feel a battle goes, but hey - it was entertaining.

I found a similar problem with the books that a lot of people seem to have with the TV series, that the quality started to fall away in the last two - A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons, with A Feast For Crows being particularly disappointing. There became too many story lines for me, some of which I didn't find stimulating. I found myself almost skimming over some of them to get to one of that I found interesting - these were mainly those involving the original characters. If he ever does get around to finishing them I think he's got a job on his hands keeping the whole thing together.
Interesting take. This is the EXACT reason why I felt that AFFC and ADWD were even better than the first three books - they introduced sense of grand scope which helped sow the seeds of the theory that all the squabbling between Starks, Lannisters and Baratheons really WASN'T the centre of the universe.

What you label as a drop in quality I regard as a significant increase in complexity and nuance. If the writing is intelligent and consistent, as GRRM's is, then extra storylines simply make for a richer, deeper experience.

Just watching them all in those clips and having had some time to think about it...

Alot of them were really one dimensional actors...

Varys, Tyrion and several others were dynamite but most left at the end were really poor.

Those were the ones who made £1mil an episode at the end...

So my take on the ending is this...its a metaphor:

Mediocre people manage to outlast others and accrue vast amounts of wealth...

Heroes fall by the wayside and intelligent beings sink into oblivion.
