Is it not overall spending? Bernard with 2 years on his contract would probably have been a 25-30 million player with salary of at least 100K pw and a few million signing on. He's on 150k pw and even with a 10 million signing on its going to take a hell of a long time to make up the difference.

I'll play for £100 a week - it's just a hobby really.

Trouble is with players like Bernard who do this, is that they come free in return for huge salaries/sign on feed which go to them rather than their previous club.

His contract will run down and he'll do the same and go elsewhere. Why shouldn't he? No resale value in this model, but lots of cash out of the club. Not sure it's healthy. Not sure that it's not. Just thinking out loud.

The only financial rules that (currently) apply to us are the PL ones, which are based on wage bill growth

The overall spending rules are UEFA rules governing those in continental competitions

Wonderful player and by all accounts a decent human being too, but too one paced and getting on a bit now.
