It was first against second in League One and a chance for Fylde to go top of the table and put the title in their hands. Alan O'Neill was in good form and kept his place in the team next to Morgan Feeney. Fylde were giving a good account of themselves and taking the game to Coventry in the first half, Bytheway was getting into good positions in the final third but unable to finish. The game opened up and both teams wanted to win, Bytheway got down the line but his cross was deflected behind. Was there to be a winner? The match went into stoppage time and Sargent had the best chance to win it for Fylde when he won the ball back in the opposition box but the keeper saved his shot. Both teams fought it out in stoppage time to get the winner but they both cancelled each other out.

DF: A point is a fair result, the game was entertaining and was anyone's. We gave as good as we got and didn't stop playing until the final whistle.

AFC Fylde vs Rotherham United

=Rotherham result.webp

Three days after the Coventry match it was a home game against Rotherham. Wisdom was serving the last match in his suspension and was eagerly awaiting his return to action. Bytheway played the ball into the middle to Scott, he lobbed the ball forward into the box and O'Neill headed over the committed keeper and the ball looped into the net! A good start for The Coasters! O'Neill celebrates his 20th goal of the season! Fylde were taking full advantage in the opening minutes of the second half, Ferguson turned nicely on the ball and sprayed it out wide to Henderson who got it down the left for the oncoming Tyler Garrett, he crossed low into the box and O'Neill stabbed it home for his hat-trick! Brilliant from the striker! 58 minutes gone and it didn't stop there, Henderson got an assist for none other than Tyrone O'Neill when he crossed into the box and he volleyed it past the keeper for his fourth! The fans sang O'Neill's name and it looked like their strikers training with Beattie and Ferguson was paying off. Fylde drifted off for a moment a minute later and Scarisbrick set up Lambert inside the box for Rotherham pulling one back with 30 minutes to go. Fylde went more defensive in the last 20 minutes and helf their nerve against an attacking Rotherham. Time was running out Rotherham to get something out of the match and Garrett got up the pitch on 89 minutes and put the ball in the box for Bytheway who was brought done and the penalty was awarded! Henderson had been replaced by Allaway so Bytheway took the kick and put it to the left but the keeper got across and saved! It was a poor penalty. Ferguson put Lee Lofthouse on in midfield for the last 30 seconds of added time and the whistle blew and The Coasters went top of the table!

DF: We have to keep performing like this now until the end of the season. We are in the best possible position and we have the possibility of doing something very spectacular.

AFC Fylde vs Swindon Town
10th March 2029

=Swindon result.webp

It was in the hands of Fylde to keep their position at the top but the pressure was on against struggling Swindon. Ferguson kept the same side that were victorious over Rotherham and Mick Wisdom was back in the squad on the bench. The first real chance came on 19 minutes when Morton got down the right at pace and crossed for O'Neill but his header was denied by the crossbar. Ryan Scott whipped in the free-kick on 29 minutes but the ball was hoofed clear, Henderson seemed to have been dragged down to the turf and the linesman flagged to award the penalty! Henderson placed the ball down and put it to the right but the keeper saved it! Henderson got the rebound and put it past the keeper! 1-0! Vince Bytheway pulled up 5 minutes before half-time with what appeared to be a knee injury. Sam Allaway took the field on the right wing. Fylde were brilliant in attack and were unlucky not to be out of sight in the first half. O'Neill should have had a hat-trick. The cheers went up on 53 minutes when Mick Wisdom emerged from the bench and came on to replace Mel Pope after missing the last four matches through suspension. Mick Wisdom showed the fans what they had been missing when he scored a free-kick from an obscure angle on the edge of the box! His 5th goal of the season! Fylde were tiring towards the end of the match but kept the ball well to run down the clock and se out the game. A good win for The Coasters as they keep their place at the top of the pack!

Plymouth Argyle vs AFC Fylde
17th March 2029

=Plymouth result.webp

Duncan Ferguson was full of praise for his centre back Alan O'Neill who got his first full international cap for the Republic of Ireland against Algeria. The defender was away on international duty and missed out on the trip to Plymouth. Mick Wisdom was back in the starting line-up alongside his midfIeld partner Brett McGavin. The match started off well in the sunshine with McGavin's early shot saved onto the post and O'Neill following it up to score but the striker was offside. After that it was very much a quiet first half with Fylde controlling possession but unable to do anything productive so far. Fylde were straight out the blocks, Morton crossed from the edge of ther box for Henderson and his header was tipped over the bar. Fylde were looking better, Henderson passed it inside to Ferguson and he found Allaway on the overlap but his shot was wide of the post. Vince Bytheway replaced Allaway for the last thirty minutes in an attempt to create for The Coasters. Euan Henderson was struggling and signaled to come off, Barry Sargent replaced him with 15 minutes to go. The opening goal came and Richard Macrea pumped the ball into the box and Jacobs had a free header which he put over the emerging Neil Foster. A bad sign for Fylde. 82 minutes on the clock, Ojebode sent the corner into the box and Deslandes headed in his 2nd goal of the season. Terrible defending by Fylde. Fylde looked like they wanted to get off the pitch and simply had no comeback in this one. A disappointing defeat.

DF: It was woeful. We fell apart after they scored the first and they put the game to bed a few minutes after. It was a chance for us to extend our lead at the top with Luton and coventry both losing today. It's a tough one to take.

AFC Fylde vs Exeter City

=Exeter result.webp

This fixture was always a tough one to predict but Fylde had won the last three meetings between the sides and Exeter were close to securing safety in League One. Charlie Dootson was on the bench after 4 weeks out with an ankle injury in a much needed attacking boost for Fylde. Ferguson dropped Mick Wisdom and Brett McGavin after their performance against Plymouth. Fylde got the game underway, the crowd roaring upon kick-off, Scott got the ball out wide to Bytheway, he ran forward and played it inside for Josh Ferguson who hit a left footed shot, 1-0! 27 seconds on the clock! Fylde taking no prisoners! 15 minutes played and here comes Ferguson again but he is dispossessed, O'Neill picked up the ball and played it wide to Tyler Garrett, he cut inside and passed to Ferguson who knocked it on one more time to Scott, Scott lined it up with his right foot and from 25 yards puts it into the top right corner! Brilliant! That could be the goal of the season! Exeter were looking to claw one back, Ryan Reynolds instigating moves against his former club but Fylde kept them at distance. Five minutes into the second half and Euan Henderson found Josh Ferguson in space outside the box and he drilled a shot past the keeper to make it three! They're making it look easy today! Exeter were threatening in the second half but Fylde were strong at the back to keep them out. Charlie Dootson was on with twenty minutes to go for the impressive Josh Ferguson who earnt a standing ovation. Stephen Schumacher went more attacking and put three up top to try to get back into the game but time was running out. The match came to an end and the home supporters were ecstatic! Fylde remain in front of League One for another week.

DF: That was the reaction I wanted and we started perfectly. I asked Josh to start taking more shots from outside the box and today it paid off with two brilliant goals. We needed to win that today and it keeps us top for the time being. Six games to play and every one of them is a final to us. This is not gonna be easy!

Rochdale vs AFC Fylde
30th March 2029

=Rochdale result.webp

Mel Pope missed the trip to struggling Rochdale due to picking up his tenth yellow card of the season so Mick Wisdom partnered Ryan Scott. Ferguson stated each game was a cup final from now until the end of the season with only six points between 1st and 6th place. Rochdale were fighting to keep their League One status so there was a lot weighing on this one for them. Ryan Scott whipped in the free kick on 6 minutes to the far post and O'Neill rattled the cross bar with a volley! With five minutes to go until the end of the half, Rochdale were playing in the Fylde half, Tyler Garrett cleared the cross but it was a poor header right to Alimi and he drove the ball low into the bottom right corner. 1-0 Rochdale! They scored with their first shot. Rochdale got the goal and looked to sit back on it. Fylde were not taking the game Rochdale and The Coasters looked to be bucking under the pressure. Rochdale came close just heading wide from the corner and so could have easily been 2-0. 68 minutes on the clock, Garrett took the throw and found Henderson, he done well to hold up the ball and played it to Morton out wide on the right, Morton played the short ball to Bytheway on the edge of the box, he looked up but couldn't see a pass, he tried his luck with a low shot and what a hit! Bytheway got the equaliser! Through the defensive bodies and into the bottom corner! Time was running out for both sides to find the winner and it was looking likely to be a draw. Rochdale won the ball back and got it forward to Higgins, he drove through the centre and found Armstrong overlapping on the left, he took a shot and Foster saved it but the ball caught the head of Alimi and crossed the line! Rochdale may have won it in stoppage time! A devastating blow for Fylde as the whistle was blown. This defeat could cost them the title!

Bury vs AFC Fylde
2nd April 2029

=Bury result.webp

After Friday's shock defeat to Rochdale it was a bank holiday trip to Gigg Lane to take on 10th placed Bury who were unbeaten in their last five matches. Despite his poor performance in the last match, Tyrone O'Neill kept his place in the starting eleven with Ferguson saying, a goal is just around the corner. Fylde needed to draw upon that fantastic defensive solidarity merged with their expansive attacking football to overcome a good Bury side. Bury were playing good football, diagonal balls out wide to get their wingers into play but Fylde held strong at the back. Fylde looked poor in the first ten minutes and could not put two passes together. Neil Foster kept them in the game on more than once occasion in a nervy ten minutes. Bytheway shrugged off his marker and played the ball through to O'Neill on 40 minutes but the keeper done well to tip it behind. 0-0 at the break and it just wasn't clicking for Fylde. This game can go either way. Midfielder Saul Bryant piled on the misery for Fylde when with thirty minutes to go he put his shot past Foster. This could be disastrous for Fylde if results go against them. Duncan Ferguson lost his temper on the touchline when Bytheway played a ball into the box and it ran out for a goal kick. Twenty minutes to go and Marshall had the ball on the left flank, Henderson put in a magnificent slide tackle and the ball ran free down the left. The race was on, Henderson bombed forward and got there first, he cut inside past two Bury defenders and slotted past the keeper! What a goal, an individual goal from Euan Henderson! He rallies his team-mates to pick themsleves up. Four minutes later and the momentum is with Fylde, Mick Wisdom crossed in the free-kick from the right of the box and Alan O'Neill was there to head in! His first goal of the season and Fyle are in the lead! What a comeback this is! Bury could have had three or four in this but Foster was brilliant in goal. Fylde have ten minutes to get through. Bury were fighting back and won the ball from Bytheway, Cockerill-Mollett tried the cross from the left but Morton blocked it. Alan O'Neill kept his cool and for a young player had nerves of steel at the back. The match ends and Ferguson punches the air and goes onto the pitch to talk to his team. An excellent come back and Fylde restore top spot in a title race that is far from over.

DF: We were slow, predictable and looked lethargic out there today, the passing was poor and if it wasn't for Foster we would have lost that 3-0. Euan turned the game on its head when he scored that marvellous goal, he got the lads going and we went on to win. It was incredible character to turn this one around but we can't afford to be complacent like that.
