Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

PRE-SEASON RESULTS 1998/99

Pre season 1998.webp

Everton came through pre-season largely unscathed but minor injuiries to Gareth Farrelly and Danny Cadamarteri but they should be fit for the first game of the season at home to Leicester. Goalkeeper Paul Gerrard picked up an abdominal injury in the last friendly against Avellino so Thomas Mhyre will start in goal against Leicester. It was a solid pre-season with Duncan Ferguson dominant in the air, getting four goals against Avellino. John Collins was a dynamo in the middle and Slaven Bilic a rock at the back.

A number of players will be in line for their league debuts; John Collins, Olivier Dacourt, Peter Degn and Alex Cleland. Francis Jeffers will be part of the first team squad at just 17 years old. 21 year old Striker Ibrahima Bakayoko is not quite fit and is likely to miss this game and 18 year old Michael Ball is in line for his first team debut.

DW: We're ready to go, looking forward to the campaign and we want to see what this side can do. There's a lot of talent in this squad and I want them to play with that freedom. Get it wide and get it into the box, we've got the players capable of hitting it long. We've got a lot of physicality in there and we want to show the fans what we can do.

Goodison Park basked in the sun on the opening day of Everton's campaign. Sky Sports Super Sunday and it was Dave Watson making his managerial debut, in his tracksuit as he was also named on the bench! The 36 year old on a Player/Manager contract still has minutes in those legs. Watson went with his strongest side and an 18 year old Michael Ball got his debut on the left wing playing in front of David Unsworth. Olivier Dacourt, John Collins and Peter Degn also got their debuts in midfield and Franny Jeffers partnered the big man Duncan Ferguson in attack. Emile Heskey started in attack for Leicester and former Everton Centre Forward Tony Cottee was on the Leicester bench. The crowd roared as Dave Watson emerged from the tunnel and there was a lot of intrigue as the 36 year old became the clubs youngest manager. Goodison was electric and a full house for the return of football, Everton looking to perform better than they did last season narrowly beating the drop on goal difference. 1 minute on the clock and Everton came close when Dacourt played it into Ferguson and he played it across the box for Jeffers whose close range shot was cleared off the line. Everton built the play nicely down the right, Degn forward to Ferguson who took it inside the box, he went for goal and Keller tipped it away. Leicester hit Everton on the break, Zagorakis played it forward to Savage and he was through, out of nowhere Weir came across and put in a great slide tackle but he stayed down injured calling for urgent attention. He's going to have to come off and look who is coming on to replace him, the manager Dave Watson! I don't think this is what he was expecting on his managerial debut. John Murtough and Colin Harvey stepped forward onto the touchline to take charge. Leicester were trying to hit Everton on the counter but Everton were playing well at the back, Davuid Unsworth getting over to support Dave Watson, he played it forward to Ball and Ball knocked it on for Jeffers, Jeffers gets it into the boc for Ferguson and his shot is tipped over by Keller. Elliott won the header beating Watson in the air but Cleland regained possession and played it to Dacourt, he went left to Unsworth and it was played forward for Ball, with a nice touch inside the box he found Ferguson and he curled it into the top left corner on 42 minutes! Everton go 1-0 up! Leicester got caught high up the pitch in half-time stoppage time and Ferguson got on the ball with Jeffers moving ahead of him, he played the ball forward and Jeffers guided it into the back of the net to make it 2-0! His first Everton goal! Calm finish from the 17 year old! Everton were flawless inside the first half but dropped off slightly in the second. Martin O'Neill brought on Andy Impey for Robbie Savage and he had a golden chance to get one back on 68 minutes when he had a free header which he headed over. Leicester did get one back a minute later when Guppy's corner was converted by Matt Elliott, Leicester back in with a chance. Everton made their first change on 73 minutes, Peter Degn went off for Danny Cadamarteri. Everton got on the ball to try to take the sting out of it as Leicester were growing into the game, Ferguson held it up and laid it off for Cadamarteri running down the right, he decided to go alone and Keller saved at the near post. Jeffers was livid with his decision, he was in space in the centre. Everton looked more relaxed now and were creating chances in the final third, John Collins was exceptional on the ball and he played it forward to Ferguson who controlled it well and found the bottom corner with his left foot to make it 3-1 with 8 minutes to go! Ferguson with his second! Don Hutchison came on for the outstanding John Collins and what an ovation the Scotsman received. The whistle blew after 3 minutes of stoppage time and what a start to the season! Dave Watson, gets his first win and he had to come on to the field for most of it! What a start and Duncan Ferguson was incredible out there. Everton off to a flier!

DW: I didn;t expect to be going on so soon but was thinking maybe the last ten! The lads were brilliant today and thoroughly deserved the victory, seeing them all pulling together and playing for each other was really pleasing. Going forward were top notch and created some quality up top, the big man was on form and he's really raring to go this season. He deserved those goals.

Is this the way to Avellino,
I've been dreaming of Bakayoko
Is this the way to Avellino
Where Peter Degn waits for me

I've ended up in Avonmouth after that little trip away. Must have got the wrong bus, plane and train again!

Beautiful football from the mighty Everton under the charismatic manager.

I don't want to go overboard so early in the season and jump the gun, but is this a team of no superstars in the 80's mould?

So true mate, i had a quick chat with Michael Ball this morning and he said hes begging Waggy to move him up to left wing so he can emulate his 80s hero Ian Wilson.

Brought a tear to my eye listening to the passion of the kid and how much he idolises his signed Ian Wilson Gola boots.
