So true mate, i had a quick chat with Michael Ball this morning and he said hes begging Waggy to move him up to left wing so he can emulate his 80s hero Ian Wilson.
Brought a tear to my eye listening to the passion of the kid and how much he idolises his signed Ian Wilson Gola boots.
All of those are part of Ian Wilson's karaoke classics. To have heard him in his pomp was apparently like having honey poured into your ears from a velvet jar and then caressed in by the Cadbury's carmel bunny wearing silken gloves - he could do it all.
Everton travelled to White Hart Lane to take on George Graham’s Spurs. Tottenham brought in Tim Sherwood from Blackburn Rovers and we were yet to see the best of David Ginola and Les Ferdinand who could be a handful. Dave Watson went with the same side that beat Leicester City with the aim of making it 2 out of 2. Tottenham lost possession in midfield and Peter Degn picked up the ball, he ran forward on 4 minutes with Ferguson and Jeffers advancing in front of him, he played it to Ferguson, he had space coming into the box from the right side, cutting in on his left foot he smashed it home into the bottom corner! Dream start for Everton! On 14 minutes David Weir lost the ball at the back to Tim Sherwood, he passed it wide to David Ginola who came down the left side, beating Cleland for pace and crossing into the box for Darren Anderton to poke home to level but the flag was up! It won’t count, Anderton was offside. Minutes later Ginola put in a great free-kick and it fell to Les Ferdinand inside the box, he brushed past Degn and smashed the ball into the back of the net to give Spurs the equaliser. This one counts. It wasn’t a bad first half for Everton, they need more phusicality and to fight for second balls as Tottenham were beginning to control the game. The ball came out to Unsworth on the left, he had space and got it into the box low for Jeffers at the near post, he played it back to Dacourt to the dismay of the Everton supporters, Dacourt done well with the ball inside the box and managed to get it into the feet of Ferguson who turned and shot low into the bottom corner beating Walker! 2-1! Ferguson with another! He can’t stop scoring! Everton back into the game and on top, Dacourt fighting fot the ball and winning back from Anderton on the left, he played it to Jeffers and he fed it to Michael Ball on the left wing, Ball with the cut back to John Collins who shot first time but it was easy for Walker to claim. Watson made two changes with 20 minutes to go, Joe Parkinson came on for Olivier Dacourt and Danny Cadamarteri came on for Peter Degn. Ginola went for the spectacular from 25 yards and Myhre done well getting across to push it wide. Five minutes to go and talisman Ferguson came off to be replaced by Nick Barmby. Everton pumping the ball clear when it comes into their half. Calderwood picked it up on 90 minutes, he passed forward to Sherwood who helped it on to Ferdinand, he was forced back to Campbell by Weir, the Anderton on the left who found Ferdinand with more space, David Weir got in an excellent tackle and Michael Ball followed it up to put it behind for a corner, great defending. David Weir injured himself in the challenge and had to go off. All 3 changes were made so Everton were down to ten. Everton just had to see out the remaining minutes, Unsworth back to Myhre, he booted it long right over the Spurs defence and Barmby was in, one on one, surely he must score but he hit the post! What a moment that could have been to seal it. Cadamarteri got it near the corner flag and smashed it against Edinburgh to win a late corner. Collins took the corner and Vega cleared, the whistle was blown and Everton pulled off a great win down South! Two out of two for The Toffees! Duncan Ferguson once again on the scoresheet and Dave Watson is off to a flier!
Sky Sports: Dave, 100% record so far, two strong wins in the league, how does it feel?
DW: Well, I can’t ask for much more, a clean sheet would be nice but the lads are playing well and we want to get off to a strong start and to have the lads on board and in great spirits is really helping. The dressing room is buzzing.
Sky Sports: David Weir went off injured, do you know much about it?
DW: It’s his calf, he is carrying tigthness, we’ll see how he is for next week but we don’t know just yet.
Sky Sports: There has been strong rumours linking Tomasz Iwan to the club, what do you make of that?
DW: Tomasz is a player we’ve been looking at and we are hoping to make a deal with PSV but it’s stalling and the process is really long winded. We had an eye on Sixo Parelta who is playing in Argentina but we’ve just lost him to Leeds United. Money is tight so we have to be making sure we are doing the right deals. I’ve got my eyes on a few players and hearing some good things but we can’t throw money around that we don’t have.

Newcastle United vs Everton

Third game of the season and whilst Everton were off to a good start, Newcastle were waiting to pick up their first win of the season under new manager Ruud Gullit. Stan Collymore was trying to adjust to life at St James Park playing up top with Alan Shearer but the partnership was yet to click.Gullit dropped him to the bench for this match. David Weir was out injured so Craig Short was selected alongside Slaven Bilic. Aside from the one change, Everton went with the same side, Ibrahima Bakayoko made the bench after recovering from a recent injury. Everton were right on it and Dacourt won the ball from Newcastle inside 15 seconds he passed forward to Ball and he passed to Unsworth who played it to Jeffers, the 17 year old played it into space on the right side for Degn to chase, he put the cross in low and Jeffers tapped it in! 30 seconds in! Everton 1-0! What football this is! Newcastle brought Everton back down to earth when Mhyre fluffed Stephen Glass’s cross and Ivan Juric tapped it into an open net to level 2 minutes later. A minute later Newcastle pounced forward, Muric was tackled by Dacourt but Rob Lee picked it up on the right side, he got past Unsworth and played the pass to Shearer at the near post, he touched it on and Muric poked it home to grab his second, Newcastle in front and we’ve had 3 goals inside the first four minutes! Myhre played the goal kick short on 8 minutes but it was intercepted by Dietmar Hamann, he played it to Alan Shearer who got it onto his left foot on the edge of the 18 yard box and drilled it low and hard into the bottom corner, Newcastle flying and Everton have sunk inside 10 minutes. Newcastle were not done there and Newcastle got their fourth from Solano’s corner, it came in for Muric who knocked it on to Shearer to tap in his second of the game. Inside the first 20 minutes and it’s game over. Everton’s defence tore apart. Maric was playing the game of his life and dropping Collymore was a genius idea, he played a diagonal ball for Glass on the left who cut inside and scored striking the inside of the post and going in, 5-1 and 30 minutes in. This is embarrassing. Alan Shearer made it 6-1 a few minutes later when he was in acres of space and he lobbed Myhre off his line. I can’t name any worse performances than this. Duncan Ferguson was struggling against Nikos Dabizas so it looks like Watson changed him sides with Jeffers. Newcastle went in at half-time to loud roars from the crowd, Everton desperate to get inside. Half-time changes were made and Francis Jeffers didn’t come back out, Ibrahima Bakayoko came on for his debut. Joe Parkinson also came on in midfield replacing Olivier Dacourt. Better start to the second half for Everton, Michael Ball’s header was tipped away by Given from close range from the John Collins corner. Rob Lee played it in behind for Shearer and he slotted again but he strayed offside and the goal was ruled out. Maric went off for Newcastle, the 23 year old Croatian scored one and got three assists today, an incredible performance. Collymore replaced him. Shearer eventually got his fourth of the game when Solano played it forward and the prolific Striker buried it low into the bottom corner, 7-1 and what a lesson for Dave Watson. Welcome to management. It’s a thud back down to earth for Everton and in some style as well. Newcastle were completely dominant and destroyed The Toffees inside 10 minutes.
DW: That was thr hardest 90 minutes of my footballing career and so many lessons to be learnt from that. I have to apologise for the supporters who made the trip, it was an unacceptable level of performance and we will be refunding each and every one of them after that.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Everton
League Cup Second Round
24th August 1998

The 7-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle was a wake up call for Everton. Going into an all Premier League tie against Sheffield Wednesday was of huge importance to supporters who were waiting to claim their first League Cup trophy. Watson made a few changes, Terry Phelan started at Left Back, Joe Parkinson and Don Hutchison started in midfield with Danny Cadamarteri on the right. Ibrahima Bakayoko started next to Duncan Ferguson in attack. Andy Hinchcliffe lined up against his former club at Left Back. Michael Ball intercepted Newsome’s pass down the right and Everton launched a counter, he passed forward to Bakayoko and then Ferguson was played in to slot past Pressman getting back on the scoresheet! What a start! Parkinson took control of the ball in the middle, holding off Peter Atherton and passed to Hutchison, Hutchison played it to Cadamarteri who spun past Hinchcliffe and crossed low into the area for Bakayoko to see it run on to his left foot and slot into the bottom corner! But he was in an offside position! The flag was up. Sheffield Wednesday came down the right with Carbone, Parkinson didn’t get over to cover the space and he was allowed to move into the area, he beared down on goal and shot past Myhre to level on 23 minutes. Hillsborough rose to their feet as Carbone was running riot but his cross was cleared by Short and Everton regained their composure. Dave Watson indicating for the players to slow it down. Ferguson dropped deep and played it right to Cleland, he knocked it forward to Cadamarteri who had the pace to go down the right, instead of crossing he went for goal but Stefanovic blocked and Hinchcliffe cleared. Everton kept the pressure on and Cadamarteri had a one on one with Hinchcliffe, beating him with ease and cutting inside, he passed to Ferguson and he laid it back to Cadamarteri, then on to Hutchison who wrapped his foot around the ball and it bobbled into the net, 2-1! Watson had Myhre play it out wide to Phelan who was getting Everton moving, with a forward pass to Ball it sucked in Carbone and it then went inside to Hutchison who had space, he played a short ball to Ferguson and knocked it on to Bakayoko who took it in his stride and was bearing down on goal, Pressman came out and Bakayoko put it just over the bar. The second half started and Hincliffe pumped it down the left, Cleland dragged Humphreys down and looked like a cynical foul. No card on this occasion. Wednesday put the pressure on and Hincliffe was playing some nice balls down the left, Humphreys cross was headed away by Bilic on 49 minutes and Everton broke, Bakayoko came down the left and waited for support, he cut it back to Joe Parkinson and he lined up a rocket of a shot that smashed into the bottom right corner! What a strike! Everton 3-1! He won’t hit many better than that! New loan signing Ibrahim Ba was on for Carbone on the Wednesday right. On 69 minutes Everton made a change, Cleland went off for Marco Materazzi making his Everton debut! Short went to Right Back. Sheffield Wednesday committed men forward but Everton were getting out, Cadamarteri now with it on the right, he went to Ferguson but Ferguson was tackled, Cadamarteri continued and won it back, the Everton supporters roared as he got into the box, it’s in! Into the back of the net from inside the box! Everton 4-1! Cup football was always special and Ritchie Humphreys got a goal back just a minute later, to pull the gap back to two. Ba put in a nice dinked pass to Humphreys on 83 minutes and he shot across goal, the ball came back in and Cadamarteri was on his defensive duties to head clear. Just a minute later Ball held it up on the left and Phelan went past him, he got the pass and Phelan went into the box, he hit an ambitious shot that went through the keepers hands and into the roof of the net! 5-2! Terry Phelan with his first goal! Everton had a game plan tonight and it worked well. Watson knew how Wednesday were going to play and with the pace of Cadamarteri on the right, he knew he would have the better of Hinchcliffe. What a performance and Everton into the third round!

ENGLISH TRIO IMPRESSING!
Glenn Hoddle was in attendance tonight as he was looking to make his England call ups shortly. Three Everton players potentially on his radar are Michael Ball, Francis Jeffers and Danny Cadamarteri. Although still young and learning the game, performances have been impressive so far this season and eyes are certainly on them. Competition is fierce for England with top players like Beckham and Shearer hard to dislodge but there is an evident gap on the left side which Michael Ball could be suitable for. England have big games coming up against Germany and Italy in September and would be a fantastic opportunity for the young starlets.
My main memory of Terry Phelan was when Ray Houghton scored that goal against Italy and Terry Phelan is the first to come over to him but instead of celebrating he looks like he wants to angrily shag him.
Goodison Park was the stage and Harry Redknapp’s West Ham were the visitors. Redknapp put faith in 16 year old midfielder Joe Cole who was showing glimpses of a quality player in the making. New signing Paulo Di Canio was off to a flier with three goals so far this season. Everton had no major issues going into this one and Jeffers and Ferguson led the attack for Everton with Ball and Cadamarteri offering wide support. West Ham gave the ball ball away down their left and Danny Cadamarteri had the pace to take it down the wing, he continued unchallenged and crossed in low, Ferguson held it up and held off Rio Ferdinand, he cut it back to John Collins and he smashed it in to mae it 1-0! Six minutes gone! Everton really looked up for it this afternoon and John Collins was having a stormer, on 32 minutes he played a fantastic ball through the West Ham defence that Cadamarteri read perfectly, cut inside and slotted to make it 2-0! Four minutes later Sinclair went past Cleland in the box but the full back left out his foot and caught the winger, conceding a penalty. It’s Di Canio against Myhre, Di Canio went for the top left corner and Myhre leaped across to tip it behind, what a save! Goodison Park with the cheers for their Goalkeeper! Lampard played the ball forward but Collins intercepted, he passed forward to Ferguson who brought in Cadamarteri, Cadamarteri ran with it and was pulled down by Sinclair, the ball ran to Ferguson and he played it to Collins but he shot wide. The Everton players furious with the challenge as Cadamarteri stayed down in the aftermath. Cadamarteri was really frustrated the West Ham players and Di Canio reacted with a two footed challenge taking him out, what a terrible challenge. A coming together from both sides saw some ugly scenes on the field. Di Canio has to walk and the referee showed him the red card. The Striker lost his head and he was saw going at it with Ferguson who was told to walk away. Tempers are flaring inside an angry Goodison Park. West Ham prepared a change and brought on Ian Wright for Samassi Abou. On the stroke of half-time Dacourt played a forward ball into the box and Cadamarteri finished first time shooting across goal, 3-0! Everton were running riot, Unsworth getting forward to join the attack, low ball into the box and 18 year old Jeffers with his 3rd of the season! Dave Watson was loving this! Marco Materazzi continued his comeback from injury with a 25 minute run-out replacing Craig Short. Cadamarteri’s number came up with 20 minutes to go and he went off to a standing ovation from all four sides, Peter Degn came on. Everton looked to keep the ball with just under ten minutes to go but a great ball down the right from Cleland saw Degn beat the offside trap, cross low into the six yard box and Jeffers tapped in his second! Everton look unstoppable! Trevor Sinclair had a run forward, cut inside from the left and forced a good save from Myhre who has made some fantastic stops earning a well deserved clean sheet. West Ham thrashed at Goodison Park in a day they’ll want to forget. Di Canio missing a penalty and then getting sent off. Cadamarteri exciting the Toffees down the right and Franny Jeffers showing his instinct in front of goal. Everton move into 5th in the table!
DW: I had concerns taking on this job, I’ll be honest. With little transfer funds available and a having a young squad, I thought it would be a steep learning curve for all of us but these lads are showing maturity above their years and they have really stepped up. The important thing is to keep it going as best as we can, it’s a long season with ups and downs to come but I’m really pleased with the effort so far.

Tomasz Iwan signs for Everton!
The news has finally arrived and the 27 year old Polish Right Winger will join Everton from PSV Eindhoven. It took weeks to get a deal over the line ut Everton have got their man! Prior to joining PSV, he finished runners up with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and spent a season at PSV making 26 appearances. Iwan is also a full international with Poland having claimed 13 international caps and 1 goal for his country.
DW: I heard some good things about the lad and went over to have a closer look. He’s a great winger who can dribble, beat men and cross a ball. Exactly what we are looking for in our team. He's going to be a huge signing for us and brings quality down the right side. Similar type of player to Andrei Kanchelskis.
Derby County vs Everton
31st August 1998

A midweek trip to Derby with Dave Watson coming up against the experienced Jim Smith. Derby went big in the window with a £3M transfer signing of Argentinian defender Horacio Carbonari. Jeff Kenna also joined the club on loan from Blackburn and Spencer Prior joined from Leicester for £700k. It saw Left Back Chris Powell make a permanent move to Charlton Athletic. New Everton signing Tomasz Iwan made the trip and was named on the bench. Derby County caught Everton out early, just 2 minutes gone, Jacob Laursen played a long ball over the top and Wanchope stayed onside bringing it down with a deft touch and slotted into the bottom corner, 1-0 to Derby. Everton got into the game and had their first shot on 20 minutes, Unsworth’s cross found Collins who hit it on the half volley inside the area and the keeper was there to push it away. Derby doubled their lead on 28 minutes when a ball parted the Everton back line and Baiano was in the clear to tap in the second. Derby took a late corner in the first half, seconds remained, Eranio’s corner was headed away by Ferguson, but Wanchope took it down and lobbed it back in beating Myhre to make it 3-0, what a finish and a second goal for Wanchope. The first change was made at Half-time and Cadamarteri made way for new signing Iwan. 63 minutes on the clock, Everton corner from the left and Iwan took the inswinger, to the near post Unsworth flicked the header in! 3-1! Iwan with an assist on his debut! Derby kicked off, Jeffers won the ball back, he passed to Ferguson who held it up and he played it to Iwan to run on to down the right, he took it down the line waiting for support and then put it into the box for Jeffers who hit the bar, it came out to Ball and he put it over the bar. 18 minutes to go and Duncan Ferguson came off for Ibrahima Bakayoko. The final change was made and it was Collins coming off to give Barmby a chance to make an impression. It was Derby who showed they wanted it more with Everton failing to keep up with the game, Dean Sturridge was on the pitch replacing Wanchope and he wrapped it up in stoppage time taking it round the keeper and finishing calmly. Derby won the game and were levels aboove Everton tonight. It was a terrible showing from Everton, poor performances all round. The only positive was Tomasz Iwan who showed glimpses of quality, got a nice assist but it will be overshadowed by a poor display.

TRANSFER UPDATES
Everton have managed to strike a deal with Manchester United to bring 28 year old Defender Wes Brown to the club on a season long loan. Wes is likely to provide defensive cover and is also a promising Right Back. Wes made his Manchester United debut this season in the Charity Shield against Arsenal which Arsenal won on penalties. Wes has made three league appearances with his most recent coming in the 6-2 drubbing of Sheffield Wednesday. Alex Ferguson was keen for the young defender to gain Premier League experience and to do it at Everton would be ideal for the player. A signing that should please the Everton fanbase.
19 year old Michael Branch joined Colchester United in Division Two for the season and has so far made one sub appearance in the league and one start in the Auto Windscreens Trophy. It was agreed between Dave Watson and Branch that if his loan spell was successful he could fight for his place with Everton, the latest report states he struggled in a Colchester U21 game against Watford U21's in a 3-1 defeat. If Branch fails to make an impact on the Colchester first team, he could find his loan being terminated.
