Blossom prognosticates a squeaker in this one: perhaps lulled into false security by their good press of late, the Toffees come out flat. Aside from Gordon's composed toe-poke in the opening minutes, when the keeper kindly spills the ball to him at the edge of the six-yard box, the Blues are unable to break down Fleetwood's 4-5-1. The game lapses into a dull stasis, with Sigurdsson and Davies pinging the ball to each other in front of Fleetwood's parked bus, a movie we've all seen before. The Fishermen suddenly nick the equalizer on the counter at 65', throwing a scare into our heroes. Carlo, fuming, throws on the first-teamers. With frenzy borne of desperation, Everton swarm in attack, with Kean and Docuore hitting the woodwork in succession. Fleetwood hang on by their fingernails, trying to get to penalties, until Richarlison curls a golazo around the near post from an impossible goal-line angle at 84'. The Toffees see out the game. Carlo gives the side the blowtorch in his post-game interview, but tips his cap to Fleetwood for hanging tough. Too close for comfort, but his men gutted out the win on a day where they did not play well.

Survive and advance.
