Fellaini ( from a belgian perspective )

Good thread. Just the other day there was a good and well written article in a Danish newspaper regarding the up-and-coming Belgian international players and of course Fellaini was mentioned as well.
Imagine me looking through the paper and then seeing a 30 cm picture of Fella in the Everton blue shirt
It seems he Kompany, Defour and some others are a product of full blown investment into the youth system of the Belgian clubs. They know they can't compete for the best players in Europe, so they put their faith in developing the talent that is already in the club - great philosophy!
The Belgian national team is now gaining the benefits from this approach and the article predicted that they could reach the previous heights that was achieved in the 80s with Phaff and Jan Keulemanns - anyone remember them?

I would give the Cahill - Fellaini partnership a bit more than two games - say 10 - as I think it has potential. The interlooping of them going forward is good and with more games together it will be easier for them with them understanding each anothers' games better.

But Defour is a great little player - hopefully Standard will get knocked out soon so that he reminds a bit hidden from the media and the big clubs of Europe. He is the sort of player that Arsenal is looking for as well.

I've seen enough of Fellaini this season to say that he's [Poor language removed] gash and will NOT get any better. What more can he offer? He can't run, can't tackle, no skill and I haven't seen him really shoot yet. He'll get us the odd header off a corner, big deal but he is at best a £2m player, complete waste of money imo
You lot must be pissing yourselves with all that money you have, use it wisely! :)

Fellaini isnt doing too bad. His passing is ok, he gets into good positions, and has scored 3 goals. The bad things is he is slow, wont jump, has a bad touch, and isnt aware of his surroundings.

£15 million is ridiculous, and thats Moyes who payed that. So when your watching Fellaini dont think of the price tag - Just rate him on how he plays. Not if hes worth it or not. If he isnt worth it, blame Moyes, or Kenwright, or both - because it is them who bought him.

Not only is he world class but his taste in jumpers is also the superb!

It does hurt that we spent our record transfer fee, an absolute massive wedge of dollar on what is really a promising young player. When you think that we will probably never have that amount of money again until something major happens with the club, it's very disappointing. We're not Man Utd, we can't afford to go around spending huge amounts on Andersons and Nanis. It's the fact that it's our entire transfer budget. We could've got someone who's as good as him at the moment for far less, or on loan and then properly gone about buying someone amazing in Jan or next Summer.

the belgian team back then was ace, but its true, this is the best batch of players weve had in a long time. with vertonghen and vermaelen, both still young, first team regulars at ajax, van den borre doing quite alright in spain (though he lacks consistency), kompany, defour, maarten martens, dembele, witsel and fellaini we've got more than half a team who should in my opinion be in the first eleven. and with the captaincy going to stijnen (brugge goalie) or simons (psv captain) weve got leaders on the field as well. add to that the fact that wesley sonck is now scoring goals like there's no tomorrow i would be extremely pissed/bummed if we dont make it through the qualifiers

Marouane Fellaini Thread

Theres been a lot of talk regarding the big man since hes signed, mainly a great deal of criticism in a fashion typical to Evertonians Marco Materazzi style.

Time to put things into perspective. Players take time to adapt, take Jagielka as a prime example. He was very poor, no one can deny that, he was older than Fellaini, English and played in the Premiership before yet look how he started his career at us...

Within a game or two - because Fellaini hasn't done fancy step overs or any fancy tricks, fans are on his back. How many games has the young lad played?

Stoke
Hull
Blackburn
Liverpool
Newcastle
Arsenal
Man Utd
Bolton
Fulham
Middlesbrough
Wigan

So thats 11 games. In those 11 games he has been MOTM three times on here, scoring 3 goals (Newcastle, Man Utd, Bolton). Thats not a bad return, he has made more of an impact that Cahill, Arteta and Yakubu in all them games.

Fellaini was signed late on, with no pre-season behind him at the club. He turned 21 three days ago, (so same age as the 'Youngsters' Vaughan an Anichebe really) doesn't speak a word of English coming into a side who have been piss poor. I keep banging the drum of him not speaking English but it is a big issue, when I played football in Tunisia and Spain and was the only one who spoke English it was a nightmare. Fellaini has only ever played for Liege and Belgium, its his first big culture shock...

Before 20 he had become a significant player for Standard Liege hence his transfer fee and played over 10 games for Belgium. For Moyes to pay £15m... Moyes, the proverbial stig alone proves Fellaini is no mug and has a good pedigree behind him.

Fans keep saying 'he's too slow' 'doesn't tackle' 'passes sideways' Maybe so but then I see attributes of constantly wanting the ball, putting himself available for possession (a rarity among our players at the minute), he rarely loses the ball, whether or not he passes sideways isn't the issue, the more established creative players should be the ones taking the ball on and creating something ie Arteta/Osman. But what I like most about the lad is, he looks comfortable on the ball. If he settles and fans get behind him, I am certain he will be a top player for us.

Time to look at the basics lads and ignore the price tag for a moment (£4m rising to £15m). He turned 21 the other day and his last game was only his tenth in the league. If you want to vent your anger at the transfer fee, blame Moyes not Fellaini. We desperately need a bit of bite in our midfield, a ball winner - we all though Fellaini would be the man, it quickly emerged thats not him. Moyes himself described Fellaini as a Cahill type player which begs the question, why sign a Cahill and not a Carsley when we need a Carsley and already have Cahill?...

This wont go down well on here and no doubt fans will continue to highlight Fellaini like last night, I fully expect the same replies from some after a defeat to say Spurs of just "[Poor language removed] off Everton, Fellaini was s**t" Its not about scoring brownie points of "I told you Fellaini was crap, see, he was crap again" As I said, time to support the lad, he needs time. Judge him this time next season.

Good post. Hes not a bad player - Its just the price tag which makes people think hes [Poor language removed]. But its not his fault that hes worth £15 million, its Moyes who bought him.

could you add if you hate him stay out to the title?

we don't need anymore [Poor language removed] posted about the lad.

Its baffling.

10 Games in the league he has played. 10. Yet the abuse he gets is unreal. Performance wise, he certainly hasn't done any worse than any of the other established players with only Yakubu having scored more than Fellaini in the league...

As I keep saying, he needs time. Just like a lot of players do, Jagielka being a typical example.

One thing I really don't understand is the flack he gets for playing short and simple passes.

We moan when Neville and Jagielka hit long balls to the corner flags and we moan when Fellaini plays a short pass to Arteta. The players are damned if they do and are damned if they don't. Unless they've got braided hair and do a few step overs once a blue moon.

Rant over.
