Fair enough, and I agree with the principle of what you are saying, I just don't equate that ethos to Rogan's interviews or at least not in enough volume. I do mainly see him as a poor stand up and coupled with his image as a bro science spouting ufc obsessed liberterian of sorts, it's hard for me to engage with him. That's probably me being a bit narrow minded but if your going to listen to someone for hours, it's hard work if you don't engage a bit with their personality.

Ultimately as far as my own personal tastes go in terms of taking the time to listen to someones show, Rogan isn't really creative enough to do irreverent comedy that others do far better, and I don't trust him to inform me of anything worthwhile either.

Deffo not a fan of his stand up and I can't for the life of me understand how he's managed to make a career of that but I do like his open mindedness and I think to dismiss him as some kind of uber-bro is unfair. I genuinely think he has a little more depth than that and is willing to take on board other viewpoints rather than see a differing opinion as being of a combative nature. Perhaps he's a little gullible or maybe recognises his own shortcomings and doesn't want to get into a verbal fight that he isn't equipped for - given his background it's entirely possible that he is all too aware of the folly of taking on a fight you can't win?

I'm not a regular listener of his podcast, it's entirely guest dependent and often too long. I enjoy it because it gives an opportunity to listen to a point of view that I can question or debate in my own head without it being cut off by an interviewer who confuses their role and instead becomes a heckler.

By design or not it's one of the few podcasts where I can debate the content in my own head. There's too many that are simply sycophants or people reinforcing their own agenda. While not a challenging interviewer he does at least recognise that the point of an interview is to listen to the interviewee.

Three hours long : does he just regurgitate already known facts, or does he have original insights ?
If you’re looking for something that’s going to change the way you look at certain historical events, then it’s probably not for you.

But if you’re looking for someone who is great at picking out the human stories within critical periods in our history and is a great story teller to boot, then give it a shot.

It's not straight up retelling. He's definitely interested in the thinking of individuals and cultures and drawing parallels. Things like Germany and their acts of aggression in WW1 or the Japanese soldiers continuing guerrilla warfare and refusing to believe that WW2 had ended years after are looked at and explained as rational acts given the culture or circumstances.

I think it's mostly going over old ground. I only have a basic understanding of WW1 though so it's fascinating to me. Dan Carlin himself though is very engaging and great to listen to.
