Got Sky Sports in August 1996, which coincided with Sky’s first season of La Liga coverage (anyone remember David Bobin presenting?). Watched Ronaldo roughly 20 times that season at Barca when he tore up the league, and without a doubt he’s the best striker I’ve seen. Seen the acrobatics of Van Basten at AC Milan (Channel 4), the nonchalant/arrogant finishing of Romario at Barcelona in the 93-94 season and with Brazil at the ‘94 World Cup, and every great forward since. In the last 30 years there isn’t a number 9 to touch Ronaldo.

The chunky version you mention that played for Madrid was an abomination to the Barca one. When evaluating great strikers the only Ronaldo that should be judged is the one in a PSV/Barcelona/Inter Milan jersey.

In his prime he was sleek and rapid. The one thing that stands out most are his tricks (stepovers, flip flap etc) which he could execute cleanly. Watching him attempting a stepover at Madrid when he got chunky was sad to see. He reminds me so much of Muhammad Ali who was two different fighters,,the slick, fast 1960s version who made fools out of opponents who couldn’t get near him, and the chunky, much slower 1970s version who often took a beating (still somehow managed to win some of those, ie. against Foreman).

He was marvellous at Barca, just fantastic to watch every game. Fastest feet I’ve seen

Romario, that's a name I haven't heard in awhile. He was damn good.

Same with Roberto Carlos. Loved his free kicks and runs. I used to practice getting that shot down so much.

Curl your toes, strike the ball at about the middle a little over the top and to the left or right. I didnt have the accuracy obviously but such a fun kick to take and watch, especially when it goes right.

Good player

I always preferred Romario and Bebeto personally, but that's probably because the 1994 Brazilian Team was the first one I knew and he was on the bench for them whilst the other two scored all the goals (I know they weren't a vintage Brazilian side but they still played awe inspiring stuff for a young kid)

They were okay, but they were no Muller.

Compared to the 82 team they weren't even playing the same sport lol

I really didn't like the 98 team either, which Ronaldo was the star of, so I think that effected my opinion of him too. I was rooting for France in the 98 Final

That period was a strange one. I seem to recall we were also linked with Dahlin, who I thought was awesome but he went to Blackburn and was awful. We ended up with Amo, who again looked a world beater at that world cup, yet that semi-final aside, never really showed it. Of course that semi-final is probably enough, but still.after you go past three players and bosh one into the top corner from 25 yards, I hoped for more.

Somebody has uploaded a fantastic video of Ronaldo at Barca. When assessing where he ranks among the all time greats it’s this period (and the 1990s in general) that is the reference point. He’s sharp in everything he does. The feints, turns, shots, dribbles, everything is executed much cleaner than the chunky abomination from the 2000s. I can’t watch a ‘best of’ highlight reel when it’s got footage of him beyond wearing an Inter Milan jersey. Ronaldo stops at the turn of the Millennium. His limited mobility meant he just became a penalty box player who got on the end of stuff (still finished brilliantly), but the player who operated from the halfway line and basically changed the game for strikers was no more. He remains the second best player I’ve seen behind only Messi.
