Fake crowd sound effects...

I’m not convinced. It’s just sound. The reason why crowds making sound works is because it’s reactive. Players running upfield to goal, crowd noise rises, players get a boost.

Just playing a constant drone will be pointless. Might as well play the ‘NOW Vuvuzela’ out of the speakers. Would rather hear the players and at least get an insight into how they’re thinking and how they play the game. (Not that I’ll watch these games mind)

It's not just a constant drone, it's actually quite convincing when done well. They have someone who mixes and triggers different samples in real time, for example when someone goes close they trigger the 'oooooooooo' sample. They also have the various chants of each clubs fans recorded and mix them into general crowd ambience throughout the game. The overall noise also rises and falls depending on if the home team are attacking etc.

It's far from perfect but I was surprised by how well they pulled it off in the game I saw last week. Obviously it misses the dynamic of the crowd getting the players hyped up but it certainly made the match feel more like a normal football match compared to the dead silence which makes every game feel like a training game.

Last time I watched a match on tv (cant remember as I've never had sky) I turned the volume off to get rid of the commentator mainly - crowd went too obviously - it was bliss.
I found my own things to see and be impressed by and my own things to see and dislike without anyone telling me how to feel, whether to enjoy it or not.
At the end of an enjoyable match I turned the volume up to hear the commentator lamenting how it had been a miserable game.

Like canned laughter in a comedy - i don't need to be told when something is funny. I just don't get the need for the inevitably irritating soundtrack.

weird isn’t it I watched the German footy and without the noise of the crowd it just felt flat, hearing the whistle this of the tackles and the ball of just felt weird . With the sound off it was a little better but not much .

Watching the NRL I don’t think I even realised they were adding crowd noise at first it just sort of drifted around me but it was certainly better and I was vehemently opposed to what I thought was a ridiculous idea .

Each to their own - but I definitely prefer the match without commentary - just like i prefer watching a film without the missus chatting through it.

I cant get beyond the idea of canned crowd noise is still having a person's opinion thrust upon you - albeit the sound engineer not a commentator.

I can live without the commentary but the lack of noise felt like pre season or a park game . Weird

THIS.
Whenever I watch football on TV I always turn the sound off.
