Confirmed Signing Fabian Delph

We can question him if he actually signs him.

As of now his record has been pretty spot on (questions over Mina so far I suppose).

Nothing wrong with questioning him sure, also nothing wrong with showing a bit of faith as his record so far means he deserves a bit of it for me.

It's not like Delph is a shockingly bad player or anything.

People questioning him shouldn't be attacked for it and simply saying "If it's good enough for Brands, then it's good enough for me" shouldn't be a debate ender

That's what my post was addressing, because some people have an almost cult like worship of Brands currently and it's not healthy

I don't even hate Delph, but there's nothing wrong with people questioning him as a possible acquisition

Again, the same arguments being used to have a go at people questioning the possible signing of Delph were given for Martina also, and every other signing who looked like he'd be meh out of the gate and ended up being meh

Granted the same arguments were made for Barry and he ended up being good, but by and large meh seeming signings do often appear to be meh

This isn't a player from a foreign league that nobody has seen. It's not difficult to have an educated guess on whether Delph would make us better

I don't think he's a terrible player or anything, but any serious amount of money and wages on him would have to be questioned at this stage considering the fact that midfield isn't a massive issue for us currently and I don't think he's an automatic starter for us

True enough but we are talking about a decent enough player. I can see how he could be a decent addition at least. I would hope he has a plan for him rather than just signing him because he played for Manchester City and England.

The squad is getting younger and we have lost a bit of experience recently, he probably ticks a lot of boxes for Brands and Silva.

Time will tell anyway, we probably wont even sign him.

It all depends on how much he costs, how much he'll be paid and how often he'll play for me

The first two need to be low enough and the third will need to be high enough for the deal to be worthwhile

Again, I don't think he's an awful player or anything, but I don't especially think he's a necessary signing either

As I've already mentioned, I would much rather us see if we could loan Ross back from Chelsea

Barkley has burnt his bridges with me. They wouldn't loan him anyway with a new manager and the transfer ban would they?

What players cost has never really worried me, playing time would because its hard to see where he would play right now but we do need options and he can fill in a few roles. Only issue for me is would he be happy with that? Surely he could get a weekly starter role elsewhere? Gueye could still go of course...

Forget it Ross, you're never coming back

I think he's a good player - but doesn't match what we are looking for. I don't see him starting with us - so would he want to be a utility / back up player here as well? What's the point? I would much rather U23 or young players are in the squad every week.

Ross Barkley - where would he play? He's not better than Gomes, he's not replacing Gana, Gylfi has got back up from Bernard or Lookman for the no.10 role
Don't get it

The cost bothers me these days considering how difficult it's been to shift the dead wood on the books. Ideally I'd like us not to earmark more wages to a player that probably isn't going to play that much

The boy Cleverley springs to mind.

The boy Cleverley springs to mind.

With most of these sort of signings if they appear underwhelming they usually end up being that way

Barry and Lennon are the only two off the top of my head in recent years that turned out to be way better than people expected

In other instances (Cleverley, Martina, Walcott, Hitzelsperger, Gibson, Stekelenberg etc) most of these underwhelming looking signings ended up being underwhelming, so I get why people are questioning this one

We've had our fingers burnt before

Hopefully Delph proves to be different if he does come here. If he does sign then he'll have my support and a clean slate

That argument sort of falls down when you realise that most of the signings people thought would be boss have also turned out to be underwhelming.
