Everton's footballing identity: what should it be?

You lost me right there at that shaded bit.

Heaven help us if Moshiri is left to pick a style

What we need Moshiri to do is to somehow find a proper football expert to look after the running of the football end of things.

Clearly I wasn’t suggesting Moshiri sit down on his own for a few minutes and pick a style out of a hat.

But he is ultimately responsible for it, so that means putting a strategy in place that delivers that style. And it can’t just be appointing a single person to do it all.

What you’ve described, aside from the word ‘proper’, he has already done with Walsh. He can’t just hide behind an appointment of one person and wash his hands of the outcome.

I do think we have lost identity and need a defined way of playing but I'm not expert enough to define how that should be when others paid handsomely to do it have clearly failed.

Philosophy as I see it should be adaptable to the circumstances unless you're Man City and can just impose yourself on the opposition for 90 minutes. As a team you play to your individual and collective strengths and try to expose the weaknesses of your opponent. That's what Burnley did to us on Saturday and we were very co-operative in letting them.

Basically we try to be competitive and play to win which is the mother of all obvious comments but the bloody obvious seems to have got lost at Everton.

People might scoff at this, but I think we need to think very seriously about this.

It's a concept which appears to have been totally missed when we started this "project". We hired a manager before we had hired a DoF and expected them to gel. The way it should work is that we should make a decision about how we want to play, then the DoF should be appraised of all of the managers in Europe and beyond who fit that mantra, we appoint one and tailor signings accordingly. Then, if we have to change managers for any reason, the transition between the two shouldn't be huge as they should already have a pool of players that they can mostly work from

Personally, and I hate myself for saying it, I think I'd enjoy watching Liverpool if I were a kopite right now. Not saying we should be copying the way they play, but the pace they play at is exciting and we've seen that a more patient, bordering-on-sterile style of play (the kind we saw at times under Martinez) leaves our fans turned off, it kills the atmosphere.

There needs to be direction from the top and style of play is one of the major decisions which needs to be made - what do we want our identity to be? Because I sure as chuff don't know what it's meant to be at the moment
