Everton youth vs PL youth

Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
There was a thread recently about the number of kids we had in the England under 19/20 squad. This chart may be a better reflection of our prowess. It shows the number of minutes English players under 21 achieved last season at each PL club.

Btw, the average across the league is 4.45%, so we do quite a bit worse than an average that is already the lowest of all major European leagues.

Think it shows that having kids in the England youth teams kinda doesn't mean much.

Another telling stat is that last year, just 35 English players under 21 made any kind of PL appearance.

Thanks Bruce, good stat's.
Ours are shocking like -- but we knew that anyway...although Moyes was sh!te bringing out of form Naismith on game after game rather than Ross etc, there must be some tension between our depth of first team squad and being able to field <21's/<18's
:)

The fact that Wigan are at 0% of the graph is one of the reasons I don't think martinez has earned his 'likes youth' tag any more than Moyes has.

England isn't the only country with young players...

James McCarthy, 100+ appearances by the age of 22
Victor Moses, 70+ appearances by the age of 21
Scott Sinclair went on loan there aged 20 and made 18 appearances

Not bad.

Good point.

Wigan also dont have an Academy like Everton, wasn't Martinez trying to get Whelan to build him one?

There's little point in Wigan even looking to build a category one Academy. Their catchment area is saturated by scouts for Liverpool, Everton, City, United etc.

I would also say that Cup or League success at youth level isn't indicative of a future generation of talent, nor is having players in the national youth teams.

Yes, he was pushing hard to get their facilities upgraded and the slow progress was mentioned recently as forming part of his talks with Whelan last month.

Regarding the table above, our stats should improve next season with the likes of Barkley, Stones (who Martinez wanted for Wigan so he must rate him), Lundstrum etc.

Do you think Wigan would have still gone down if Martinez had played McManaman from the start? Or do you think a 33 year old right back called Emerson Boyce who kept him out of the team until march was the better option on the right wing?

Didn't Martinez say that McManaman had confidence issues and at one point if he told him he was playing the next day he would fall apart over night. So he wouldn't tell him he was starting til before kick off until the lad got used to it. Can't remember who told me that, so not sure of the source but there could be more to it than 'he finished the season well why didn't he start it'

If the players are good enough they will start, the argument is that they recken Barkley and Duffy are ready and needed games to learn. I'm just hoping Martinez will be braver then Moyes when it comes to our young players.

So your argument is that because he didn't play one youth player he doesn't like to play youth despite evidence to the contrary ?

As Ralphy points out, there could be things behind the scenes which none of us know about.

I must add that he can't play youth if they're absolutely gash.

My mate got released by Liverpool U18s last season because he wasn't getting a game and this season has virtually walked into Wigan's U21s. Shows the standard.

The evidence to the contary is that over 4 years, two 20 year olds he paid more than a million pounds became regulars.

There's nothing to indicate he's any more likely to play young players than the average prem manager. This idea that he's another paul lambert seems to be entirely wishful thinking.
