….will be a worrying time for lots of Academy youngsters with futures on the line this summer. The rewards can be great but it’s such a cut-throat and unforgiving profession for the majority that are cast aside.
There’s life outside football but many of them will be devastated.
I'm sure they do as much as they can but more needs to be done for clubs to help these released young players etc.
I think one of the major stumbling points is wages, the kids at under 18 level for us will be more on what the main lads at Tranmere and Morcombe are on.
If there was some sort of 'wage supplement' scheme......although not perfect as the older more experienced players (and likely higher contributing) players would be on less than a young kid just emerging in pro football.
Its a brutal part of the game, but i suppose that's why its so lucrative if you succeed, even at a lower level, you need to be strong mentally, physically and lucky to make it at any level
