Showing my age here but in my lifetime:
Lost v WBA in 68 final afer extra time
Lost v Man City in 69 semi final. Last minute goal.
Lost v RS in 71 semi final after being 1-0 up.
Lost v RS in 77 semi final replay after being robbed of a late late winner in the first game by a refereeing decision.
Lost in 1980 semi final replay to a last minute extra time winner v West Ham. YESTERDAY FEELS LIKE THIS ONE!
Lost in the 85 final v Man U after extra time.
Lost in 86 final v RS after being 1-0 up.
Lost in 89 final v RS after extra time
Lost in 2009 final v Chelsea after being 1 up.
Lost in 2012 v RS to late late goal after being 1-0 up.
Lost yesterdays semi final to at last minute goal.

My sons have experienced those defeats from 2009. Two losses from winning positons, and yesterdays heartbreak.

At least I've seen us win the cup twice in that period and the league 3 times. Oh and our only european win v Rapid Vienna.
Its totally unbalanced. Killer instinct needed and we haven't got or had it really.

Really feeling gutted today and more so for my lads and the younger generation. Things have to change someday!.

But how do you develop that killer instinct? 2 of the games you mentioned (85 and 86 cup final) was arguably our strongest team ever. The RS no matter what team or era always pull a rabbit out of the hat when they need one. Maybe a manager with a win at all costs mentality is needed.

Surely our best chance of keeping the best players - including, by the way, the likes of Mirallas - would be to appoint someone like Pellegrini STRAIGHT AWAY. Unless we do it before that's too late we'll be going nowhere with half the decent players in this squad out the door.

4-5 of this squad need to be shown the door. To lose 3-4 valuable top players as well means we'll do well to improve on the 14th place Martinez will leave us with. If the board don't act before the summer break we'll be minus many players and on 4 points from 10 games next season before the board get the message.

Agree we need a top manager/well known name as a statement of intent. They would be able to attract players and possibly keep our better players. If we go for the potential managers such as Eddie Howe then how on earth would we attract any top players and what would that say to the players here. The appointment of a manager is going to be such a defining and massive decision. We now have the finances and have to act like a team that means business. Big decision needed.

Big decision needed and sharpish as well mate.

As a team if we dont score the chances when they come along we lose the game as eventually the defence will fall apart and we concede.

I hate that empty feeling you get after you lose a big game particularly a semi final I find myself sinking into a depression god knows I should be use to it by now.

Its the hope that kills you

REPLY TO ROCHDALE BLUE
Well we won in 84 (lost 85 & 86). Howard Kendalls team won it and the CWC final in 85. And two league titles. So he (and Catterick too) did win titles. Obviously need good players, but the manager has to be the one who drives the team. Instilling the will to win and never say die. And for me, when a goal up, or when getting back to 1-1 like we did yesterday, finish teams off. We don't do it often enough. As you know, how many times have we been ahead in big games and teams have still turned it round on us. Its got to be throughout the club. Hoping the Moshiri era (and new manager) will bring this to the club.

You missed:

Villarreal and Collina
QF at Old Trafford and 97th minute winner 1983
Villa at Old Trafford 1977
Mimms replaces Southall - injured playing for Wales.
Carlisle home and away 1975
West Ham 2-0 and a penalty to come..

and a few more... It's called finding another Nugget from the Infinite Mine of Hurt - a mine that is owned and run by RS

Haha. I know mate. I leftout the QF's but some killers there too. That one in 83 at Old Trafford was a feeling like yesterdays! Gutting. And obviously Villa in the League Cup final 77 replay.
It makes you saviour the wins but they just aren't often enough. Still love the Blues though!!

Yedtersay still hurts, not so much the outcome - I fully expected us to lose under this tit - but the wounder of the injury time goal.

That first half was shocking, but so akin to what we've been served up recently that it wasn't actually shocking to the system. 2nd half was much, much better and we could have even nicked it. Overall, I'd say they were the better sidee and - much as it still hurts to say it - the better team won.

I legged it straight down the stairs when they scored as I couldn't face it and was gobsmacked by the amount of Utd fans getting a similar early dart. No thought of staying g behind and savouring g the moment, the bad teds.

I actually then went straight to a New Order gig at the Albert Hall and it felt mad that I was watching a Manc band and undoubtedly some of their lads also in the crowd. They were boss, thankfully, and helped to numb the pain.

Then I woke up this morning....

Oh, and I must be a glutton for punishment as I'm off to the Palace v Watford semi this afternoon (free ticket through work). The wound will be exposed as soon as I step off the train at Wembley.

Has he gone yet?

Really think the Merseyside derbies are great barometers for where we are at, particularly the aways. Form can go out the window and you are seeing the mentality of the club. If we have the ability/mentality to do it in those two games then we can quite honestly handle any game. Not talking about 1 nil smash and grabs because once in a while they happen but actually having the ability and belief that we can win them. I do think we revert to type in big games and more recently become devoid of ideas for the lesser games. It seems to not only be an ability thing with us but a mentality.

I felt this, got out as quick as I could and tonnes of United fans outside already... we would have had to have been kicked out!!! I did want to ask them why they didn't stay behind and cheer on their team.

I have been watching us for over 30 years now and believe I have a good understanding of the game. However it wasn't until the last three or four years I've realised the importance of a good manager. Look at United SAF went and DM lost the dressing room. Brenda with the RS was por, even Villa with the French no mark. Then you look at Leicester and what a good manager can coach and how a team can perform, also currently the barcodes. This is why Martinez has to be replaced PDQ as a quick swift statement of intent by Moshiri otherwise we too could capitulate a la Villa.

Never felt as wounded at the end of a footballing week as I do right now.

Sad that a generation of blues have seen us win [Poor language removed] all. Nothing will change unless the attitude of the club changes from top to bottom. I saw loads of fights inside the ground between our own fans and was also told to sit down by moaners behind me. Ridiculous
