No such thing as a toxic atmosphere at Goodison anymore. Every game at home now is just a no atmosphere. Players come out to a polite round of applause then it falls silent until/if we score there is a poor attempt to sing when we're winning but usually not for long. Even the night match derby at home last season was flat.
I think this is a reflection on the general air of
weltschmerz, of resigned acceptance, apropos of just another season where we merely make up the numbers (or, in the case of the derby, a match we know we're not going to win). I suspect that if we're drawn into a real relegation dogfight, when winning (or not losing) becomes essential, the gravity of the situation will generate atmosphere.
For, (as any astrophysicist will tell you), in the absence of sufficient gravity, there will be no atmosphere.
