Let's be honest here we absolutely battered them in that 2nd half with 10 men.
Bodes well for the future.

A lot of positives can be take out the game even though we got beat..
Osman today wasn't quite Neville vs Wigan in the cup but it might be a long time before Osman commands a starting place.

Well Martinez claims he learned a lot today, so let's hope one of the things is that Leon Osman is no longer a good enough starter for a Premier League side. I'd rather have John Heitinga in there, and that's saying something.
Other options would be Barkley dropped slightly deeper or Naismith behind the striker (obv only one of them would play if Barry and McCarthy are available), or even one of the younger lads (Lundstram, Green) being rewarded for their good work.
As it is such a disaster and handicap having Osman in there it may even make sense to favour a different formation when we're down to the bare bones, thus getting Jelavic in there instead in a 4-4-2.
Just pissed off Barkley was 'rested' today, he doesn't need it.
I really, really hope that is Martinez's main learning from the game.
Everybody else has been able to see it for years. We all saw it for Neville WAY before he embarrassed himself one too many times and the manager had no option but to take him out of the team, so it's not inconcievable that we have been able to see something the manager hasn't, on this occasion too.
Osman will stop us challenging for the top five if he starts many more games, and that's not an exaggeration.
------------Casillas--------------
Coleman--Jagielka--Mangala--Baines
Deulofeu--McCarthy--Barkley--Mirallas
------------Jovetic------------------
------------Lukaku-------------------
that would be a decent team to have for the start of next season when we compete for the prem and champions league
Total knee-jerk. Osman made one mistake today.
How do you know that Barkley doesn't need resting? He can play every game but he's not going to be at his peak if you don't pace him and he risks possible burn out. Besides the physical exertion, the stress and excitement will take their toll, especially because it's all new to him.
Jagielka virtually did the same thing with his header back. Why aren't you berating him?

I posted this in the immediate aftermath of the game, so may have got lost among the knee jerking...
OBSERVATIONS
1. We would never have lost that game playing with 11 men.
2. You cannot legislate for the red card/ penalty incident.
3. Osman was to blame for receiving the ball "blind"; should've been more aware and received it side on. An argument could be made for Howard to call for it to be passed straight back to him if he sees Ki closing down his team mate.
4. Howard barely touched Ki, if at all.
5. Referee was poor all round.
6. Unfortunate not to get a point (or even all three) based on the second half.
7. Mannone played the game of his life.
8. We were slightly overly-reliant on Barkley's long shots, albeit the majority of these being very good.
9. We showed great character and spirit in our second half performance.
10. We really went for it, but just couldn't break them down.
11. We'll miss Barry and Howard for Southampton.
Now looking at the stats and getting over the horrible feeling of disappointment, I remain positive and upbeat. I know it was Sunderland at home, but to have the following stats having played with 10 men for 65 minutes is incredible:
Possession: EVE 55% SUN 45%
Shots: EVE 26 SUN 13
On Target: EVE 9 SUN 6
Corners: EVE 11 SUN 2
Quite frankly, it was just one of those days.
