You don't need a very strong squad to win a knockout cup. You just take it one game at a time and hope you meet a few weak teams along the way.

But then what if going full strength in the cup results in injuries/fatigue in the league campaign where we fall short of europe?

Thats the issue for me - the top sides can rotate whereas we simply can not.

If we were 10th and 7+ points outside of european spots I would say go all out for the cups - but for the first time in many years top 4/6 finish is more than a possibility and the financial boost/FFP/next level players that europe can bring to help further Carlo's evolution of the squad for me we have to go all out for the league this year.

The cups just a distraction with our present weak squad / injuries imo - im not saying throw the game and I would go full strength against Spurs given their strength on the pitch but for this one against lesser opposition I would be resting all the key players bar Doucoure as the result means little in the grand scheme of things this season & ultimately a 2nd string is still good enough to win this lot on the day should they actually put in a bit of effort.

True, but why rely so heavily on chance or "hope"? Our approach must be to build the strongest squad we can and reduce the reliance on luck. If we get some luck on top of that, so much the better.

But luck and trusting to "ifs and buts" has been the Everton way for a while - even among fans. "If we don't get too many injuries" we might challenge for the European places. "If we can keep players fit" we might be competitive. Yet, if we did get lucky and achieve something, nobody would be putting it down to luck at all. Luck isn't a strategy.

And carlo has already said that digne and iwobi would not be playing tonight but be back for Leicester. Add to that no allan and that's already 3 starters not playin tonight..
So we aren't going full strength.

Just take it one game at a time. We'd like a stronger squad but the one we've got isn't weak.

I'm not saying we should rely on luck, but I am saying there's as much chance of getting injuries against Leicester as against Sheffield Wednesday.

These teams always raise their games it's true...

But providing the energy & intensity is there quality will overcome...
Yeah, don't want to be negative, but we seldom show a ruthless streak against lower league opposition. I completely agree with your sentiment though.

[/QUOTE][QUOTE="spectateur, post: 8443027, member: 50217"Yes, shops and other commerce had Wednesday afternoon off as they worked all day Saturday.
There were Wednesday afternoon leagues then.

There was a Wednesday business. Houses league in Liverpool up to the 1970s to my knowledge, it could have gone on longer than that, but, I started working away in the early 80’s so Liverpool only happened at the weekend for me then.
