I thought the same thing initially, then on replay, there were a couple players behind Gomes, so I think he was properly positioned...but at least he was aggressively reacting to the ball. Zouma was to blame IMO. Keane didn't react, either, and Zouma may have been distracted by Aguero, but that's not how playing your zone works. You can move with the player, but you have to attack the ball. I personally would RATHER play that way as a bigger CB myself. Give me a bit of space and let me go after the ball. I really just think our two CBs are crap in the air, honestly. Service today off corners was good, was even better against Wolves and we did NOTHING with it.
Good insight mate.
I thought Zouma was with Aguero (which I wouldn't want). But when you say it like that (freedom in the zone to attack the ball) it makes more sense. But....clearly they aren't attacking it.
Also, what happens when the opposition put it in a 'zone' where our smallest players or poor headers of the ball are? Example... Harry Maguire on the back post with Coleman? Zouma and or Keane nowhere in sight. I'm just not a fan of it.

Tom Davies played really well tonight. The performance was there from everyone but Kenny and Davies stood out for me. Criminal giving them a goal on a plate in the 46th minute from yet another set play. I must say though if we played like that every week we certainly wouldn’t of been losing like we have been. Hopefully they take heart from the way they played and put it against Watford on the weekend!! COYB

Manager definitely deserves most of, if not all the blame. Firstly we haven't had the same defenders/players over 5 years. Secondly we haven't been topping the conceding set pieces charts over last few years.(till now) Silva has. Even if the players are crap. The focus should be on Silva giving the evidence. Players are interchangeable.

And so are the managers, and we've been crap under successive ones!

Zouma literally cannot mark people. He was the same at Stoke last season. The best defender we have is currently injured, but he hasn't been great at marking either. Jagielka is probably the only one we have who knows how to organise a defence. We don't have a leader on the pitch, and it shows.

I'm not saying Silva doesn't need to improve it. It's clearly a massive issue. But the players simply are not up to scratch and I'm sick of them getting away with it.
