Baines was one of England's most creative players and defensively there was nothing he could do when Gerrard and Rooney don't drop in to give cover like what happens when we play a 4-2-3-1.

I thought he had a good world cup. It's not his fault Roy is a moron and Gerrard a has been.

Baines didn't have a good world cup mate. Nowhere near good. It doesn't make you less of a blue to say it.

And that's your opinion but if you want to justify then what exactly did he do wrong?

If you want to agree with the Everton hating press and pin the blame on Jags and Baines then fair enough I actually do think it makes you less of blue.

I've just looked it up there's the whoscored.com ratings for each of the England players

Jags and Baines where mid table above Ross, Sterling, Gerrard and Welbeck. I also think Baines was a bit unlucky as he made a total of 5 key passes and none where converted, throw in a few assists and he would have been right up there. Put it this way, at Everton he averages 1.5 key passes a game, at the world cup he averaged 2.5.

If England are looking for someone to blame then it's Gerrard but even I think that's unfair. Roy played 4-4-2 with a pensioner in midfield who played in a team that conceded loads last season, what did he think would happen?

It's not just the Everton players though. Every single player had a poor World Cup. That's why we got knocked out so early.

As for the media blaming our players, then that's really your problem if you let the media get to you. I know I don't.

I don't think he had a bad World Cup on a personal level, he was under-utilised and over-laden in defence, he was there for a very poor manager, wasn't good/wasn't bad imo

Agreed, I don't think you can say Baines did anything fundamentally wrong like giving away a cheap pen or letting a marker slip him on a corner and score. He was hung out to dry as part of an abysmal tactical set up, and this left him in an untenable position, which made him look bad.

In no way can it be said that Baines had a good world cup.

To be fair mate it's comments like this that will get you a justified neg.

Ijjy wasn't saying he thinks that Jags & Baines were to blame for England's failure. He just said Baines didn't have a good World Cup. It's an opinion, not a fact, tho' I agree with it, with the caveat that most England players had an equally poor World Cup.

Also, the whole thing about ranking other members here in how Evertonian they are is a slippery slope. It's just bad vibes, lar.

You make some good points otherwise, I do think we should be wary of the weak links in our squad. I trust Martinez is aware of this, and think he may yet bring another couple in, even if just loan. Trust him on Barry, he wouldn't have signed him if he didn't think he'd have the legs.

Well I assumed he was one of the ones who negged me yesterday so I wasn't exactly in the mood to pull any punches.

I stand by my comment. An average of 2.5 key passes in a game, up from an average of 1.5 key passes for Everton. That's at least 1 key pass a game more than anyone else in the team. He should have had 2 or 3 assists. That's huge especially for a defender.

It wasn't his fault he had no cover helping him defensively.

Yea I think he left McGeady on because he was so bad, has been in all of preseason which is perhaps why he looks like he's playing with fear. I really genuinely think he was giving him this pre-season before signing another winger.

It was hard to judge Baines yesterday. The whole team where so poor in the first half and normally him and Pienaar look telepathically linked but yesterday looked like strangers. I think Baines is fine. I thought he had a good world cup, one of England's most creative players and he's not a worry.

But I think you've hit the nail on the head. They all look like total strangers, it's perhaps unfair to single out any one player.

Blue tinted glasses. Him and his English team mates were pretty average
