The team that won the Champions League and the team that missed out on the league by a whisker are two completely different sides. The side that missed out on the league by a whisker was the Benitez team, that team actually won nothing at all and he was sacked a year after that. He spent an absolute fortune on that side.
well the team that finished 2nd also got to another CL final, why are these not evidence of an outstanding side? And the money he spent doesn't seem excessive to me, in view of what he achieved.

so getting to Champions League finals and missing out on the league by a whisker isn't evidence of an outstanding team. why not?
2005 - almost went out in the group stage to Olympiakos, had a very dubious call go their way in the semis against Chelsea and Milan stepped off the gas majorly at 3-0 in the final.

2006 - were 3-1 down in the third round at a then League One Luton before the hosts bottled it, poor in the final and lucky West Ham lost their nerves at 2-0 and 3-2 up

2007 - lucky to scrape by Barca in the last 16, should have lost by more in the first leg of the Chelsea semi and outclassed by Milan in the final. Conceded 9 in 2 cup ties against Arsenal at the Pit

2009 - lost the title by 4 points despite picking up 31 out of 33 points in the run in, including battering eventual champions United because of dropping silly points to City and a soon to be relegated Middlesbrough before that late run

yes, I mean, if that was us, we'd be talking about it for the next hundred years surely. Outstanding, no?

well he is now OUR manager, and the reason people are hammering him is cos they say he's no good?
Excuse my distrustfulness but to call a squad which cost a fortune and won [poor language removed] all "outstanding" is a bit strange if you don't have warm feelings towards them.

On 19 July 2019, Rondón signed with Dalian Professional F.C. (then Dalian Yifang) of the Chinese Super League, reuniting with manager Rafael Benítez who had joined the club two weeks before and reportedly activated the player's release clause of £16.5 million.

4 out of 15 of these (Torres, Kuyt, Mascherano, Alonso) were good signings.

Yikes.

You don’t think the money spent was excessive to win nothing? Because that’s what his “outstanding” side did.
