Hazmat been doing a lot of this it seems...

To cut to the chase - this is a paper asking questions of a club is it not? What right does a newspaper have to expect answers to a question? If the question came from the authorities, then that is a different matter. This is the press asking questions - who cares?

Mate with your background in PR and being an Everton supporter you should know how appalling our communications strategy and delivery are. The idea that they will have thought of having something prepared, well yes they should have, but this is Everton.

Not wishing to be cynical but for all the good things we do, comms is not one of them.
My thoughts exactly. This is Everton. My feelings are we'll be 100% innocent but might mention it 8 or so years down the line.

Right. Heres the extract from the piece on Crewe.......Ive highlighted us. We replied NO to both questions. Not the same as "no reply".

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/crewe-officials-urged-to-resign-cwhhfk57j

The Times
asked all Premier League clubs bar Chelsea the following questions yesterday:

1. Has your club made any payments to former players as compensation for alleged sexual abuse by people employed by or affiliated to the club?

2. Has your club made any confidentiality agreements with former players that forbid them from talking publicly about alleged sexual abuse they may have suffered?

We received the following responses:

Arsenal No to both
Bournemouth No reply
Burnley No comment
Crystal Palace The answer to both questions is no. Please note we are able to answer categorically for the period since 2010 when CPFC 2010 took over the club. We have no knowledge of this happening under previous ownership, or reason to suspect it ever happened, but cannot answer on behalf of previous owners.
Everton No and no
Hull City
No and no
Leicester City No reply
Liverpool No and no
Manchester City Not to our knowledge on either question.
Manchester United No reply
Middlesbrough The club have no knowledge of any such payments being made or of any confidentiality agreements relating to such matters.
Stoke City No reply
Southampton Southampton would like to confirm that we have contacted Hampshire Police following information supplied to us in relation to historical child abuse within football. Hampshire Police and Southampton Football Club are committed to working together to investigate any historical allegations that may be brought to light in the Hampshire area.
Sunderland No and no
Swansea City It is no to both questions
Tottenham Hotspur No and no
Watford No and no
West Ham United Categorically no
West Bromwich Albion The answer to both is no
Thanks mate.

That's smashing.

Everton did answer, and said no to both queries. Not sure why there were question marks that we hadn't, as that seems very clear.

On occasion I completely agree but in this case, what's better no reply and leave your name in the picture or just reply, as other clubs have, no and no. Some saying categorically. This investigation is not going away and the less clubs to focus on, the more interested media and the public become. Remember without the papers, no one would know about Chelsea.
Don't make out the papers to be proper investigators. They're only interested in getting the seeds of a story to sensationalise it and sell. The investigation stops at the seed, yet they still hold themselves as the peoples' judge jury and executioners... so long as they can flog their ill conceived ideas to a public desperate to pillory anybody else, so long as it makes them feel, for once, superior.
Let the press wait and report on what the appropriate authorities find in due course, after a proper investigation.

I find it totally unbelievable that football correspondents didn't know about any of this, why was there been little or no reporting of this before now.

For the same reason that very few journalists in the lobby reported on political misdeeds; they were (and are) to a massive extent dependent on the people they are meant to cover for stories and (in the case of bigger clubs / politicians) their jobs. Aside from a circle of journalists at the Guardian (where hacks like Daniel Taylor, Barney Ronay and especially David Conn regularly expose things of concern) its hard to think of that many others who would have broke this.

Unfortunately I suspect you're spot on
