It's very easy to hold shares indirectly. However directors of all UK companies have to disclose their shareholdings in the companies they are directors of. Bill Kenwright and Robert Earl declared their beneficial ownership each year. If, as is being suggested by some including @bizzaro the beneficial ownership was actually held by Green, then criminal offences have been committed.
But as he never has had beneficial ownership of Everton football club, it is an entirely spurious discussion.

Philip Green used his wife in order to pay his family the largest dividend in British corporate history. His wife was a proxy.
He doesn't have to declare something if its in another persons name. By definition a proxy.
