European Super League

Do you really think local Utd, Liverpool and City fans would go for this? Especially City, considering they're already not that sold on Champions League. I very much doubt they'd want this to happen

Local fans? Who cares about local fans? Global viewing figures and the bottom line is what matters to them. They would play in empty stadia if the money is right.

Aside from City and PSG bribing Infantino, this is actually disgusting. If true they should be kicked out of their respective leagues and left to it. Cant imagine fans of any of those teams being happy about this, but I suppose it lines the owners pockets.

Liverpool look so out of place in that list, all those other sides im sure regularly win the title and cups as well, funny thing is they camt compete with City now, go into that and they will have even less of a chance.

Why are people always fearful of this? It would be absolutely amazing for a club like us. Get rid of the financially doped clubs and clubs like us, Spurs, etc. Would dominate and actually win stuff.

Would never happen sadly as this is what the CL effectively is these days.

It wouldn’t be “amazing” for a club like us.....it would be a disaster for both the prestige of the club and would lead to a scaling down of any plans Moshiri has for the club going forward .....and the morale of the fans who would have to live in the RS shadow in perpetuity with no way out.

Take that attitude to its logical conclusion and we could say relegation to the Championship would be beneficial as we might actually win that league.

The Premier League would lose all its funding, interest, viewing figures and sponsors.

Where would that really leave us? Facing bankruptcy?

Do you think Chelsea and Liverpool fans would enjoy being the whipping boys of the league?

Would it, though?

The problem that TV and the companies who fund football will have is that this super league is relatively small; the TV rights packages will probably support one or two deals per nation (one for Spain, France, Italy, Germany, two at a push here), there will only be a certain number of advertisers who can physically be the "approved brand" of the league or at individual clubs and all of this will be expected to cost far more to them than it does now.

TV companies, advertizers and the rest of the money that funds football will stay and its not inconcievable that the removal of the doped clubs might actually improve the financial wellbeing of the remaining ones, especially if (given what Bayern were allegedly looking into) the remaining clubs have a monopoly of the international players.

As you say though, the issue is whether or not some clubs would accept winning zip for a decade in exchange for coining it in. I can see that the RS would - lets face it they have done so far - but would Real Madrid, Bayern or Barca?

I don't want something like this to happen because it feels like it could go wrong and ruin the fun of following the sport. I already don't enjoy at least 3 out of 4 games between clubs on that list. Taking the spectacle out of it makes it even less appealing. As an American, one of the fun parts of football is how different the structure is from the major American sports. This seems like a sloppy way of trying to copy the American system and I can't say I'm a fan.

Do we think this is what those clubs really want, or is it just an opening gambit in yet another move to get a bigger slice of the pie?
Every change in the champions league, from when it was just all the league winners in a straight knockout to what it is now has come about as a result of the same clubs threatening to breakaway. This is no different, give it a couple of months and uefa will counter with some proposed rule change that helps those clubs maintain and / or increase their revenue stream and all will be forgotten.

It will just be a replacement for the Champions League, the clubs will still stay in their national leagues. We aren't that lucky enough to see the back of the RS.

This has all come about due to the fact utd and now Arsenal have struggled to qualify and the rest are thinking what if. Sneaky buggers trying to close off competition, when they created the football league they should have done away with relegation and promotion and where you started is that for life. We wouldn't have had a Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs then and it would have just been us and Preston winning the titles...

If I had to guess the clubs that are driving it are the English clubs that have realized someone has to miss out on the CL every year and Milan because they can't get it together and are a couple more years of no CL from bankruptcy. Unfortunately it appears the greediest people in football have the most influence. Although the absolute top of the greediest competition is Raiola, some of these clubs run that tit close. It's disheartening because a lot of people get screwed over by this.

Funny thing is they will end up moving the teams around, like the talk of Oakland Raiders moving to London, same will happen here, Liverpool can go to either Trondheim or Beijing since they problerbly have more support there then here, lets face it, the current money spinning club has nothing in common with the club Bob Paisley and Shankly managed.
I hope it happens, replace those that leave with the bigger League One clubs, Forest, Wednesday, Leeds...etc have a more level league like the 80s

I read the whole article about this and it's all about money and zero about the fans. Sad really because I do love football but if this happens I just can't see my interest level continuing. Not to mention the World Cup in 2026 will be dreadful since either clubs won't be releasing players or all but maybe 8 teams of 48 will be made of almost entirely players who don't play at the highest level. Money just killing the greatest game on Earth.

The other obvious thing is that if this were such a great idea they wouldn't be hiding it. The people in charge know that this only benefits them and their pockets. It's very frustrating to see something like this and know it will probably work because football is too popular and not enough people will say no thanks.
