European Super League

Thing is for a while now they have seen the Man U game as more important than the Derby. And I agree it wouldn't work but money talks and the money men usually get their way in the end.

True but its still a local rivalry built on years of tradition.

You wont get that with say Liverpool against Monaco or something.

I can't see it happening anytime soon tbh.

The disadvantages including international representative sanctions, so no national football for players from say Brazil, where this still represents the pinnacle of their personal ambition, far outweigh the immediate advantages which may not last too long or in effect be that secure for the majority.

The pay per view audiences in the UK are perhaps behind the rise of the premier league and have made it far more lucrative than other leagues.

The attraction is far greater for some stranded in leagues that no longer offer the competition or way to riches where they can then compete with the premier league, for them there is no obvious way out and this perhaps the golden alternative.

If TV interest soon fades as seems possible and the new league doesn't help subscription deals in the crucial UK market (or worldwide if it becomes uncompetitive for that matter) then not withstanding other countries taking its place, the risk for UK clubs taking part is all the greater.

With potentially no great attraction for worldwide tv audiences if it evolves into the majority of the games becoming worthless and futile as the strongest team(s) dominate there will be no way back.

The risk is far, far greater for oligarchs owning English based teams now. Whereas for Bayern, PSG etc they have nothing to lose and everything potentially to gain.

As for foreign owners of premier league clubs they will be attracted to an initial massive windfall but the risks for these owners on future profitability and sustainability of those profits is huge too, they are risking far more than the continental clubs in one team stagnant and unattractive for TV - leagues

If you invest for the medium term you tend to do it with an idea of the future prospects, to do so especially with such large sums involved seems essential. If there are real doubts as to the sustainability of profits then those doubts will be taken on board.

An initial bonanza is very attractive especially if you intend to sell and move on quickly which tbf could well be a viable strategy here, the immediate windfall would be worth risking all for some and more especially if those clubs are now based in Germany or France and called Bayern or PSG.

Even looking slightly ahead there could be problems, its not hard to see at all. FFP was rushed into with no thought to the 'unforseen' but very obvious consequences. Apparently the UEFA chiefs have done their level best to backtrack when its affected top clubs' dealings, perhaps this has even contributed to this idea. Will they this time think what will likely happen?

To say this looks far more attractive to some and far less to others just seems to be based on reality to me.

And so it begins and as was so obviously the case the far less enthusiastic premier league elite clubs' owners and top brass quite rightly and wholly expected - start to urge maximum caution....

The cracks so widely predicted here between the teams who can see the obvious drawbacks to this new super league, and have by far the most to risk, i.e. the premier league five, and the continental one team league giants with everything to gain and nothing to lose, principally Bayern and PSG.

Manchester United and Arsenal have stuck their heads above the parapet and urged the utmost caution in proceeding while Bayern have been amongst it's most prominent promoters

No surprise why then as detailed in previous posts.

It's just not happening anytime soon imo, maybe eventually it will but that's some time off and not in it's proposed format

La Liga demands action against City after scale of ‘deceit’ exposed

Spanish league chiefs have called on Uefa to take action against Manchester City after new leaked files revealed the full extent to which the club are alleged to have deceived the European body over financial fair play (FFP).

The leaked documents appear to show that tens of millions of pounds that was supposed to have come from the sponsors Etihad Airways was paid directly to the club by the owners

Well I'm totally shocked reading that, never did I think for one second that they were using the family's airline just to get round FFP! I can totally see how UEFA were bamboozled by that complete tenuous link...

That City thing is a joke. Yes of course its his own money but the rules were made to keep the rich at the top of the game. Man U's debt should be more of a concern.

Wasnt debt meant to be the origional rule but was then amended to spend/wages? All that does is keep the balance in favour of the Utd's, Barca's, Madrids etc.

The whole thing is a sham

I can't see it happening but would be very interesting if it did. Would mean transfer fees, wage bills, tv revenue, ticket prices etc would all have to come down significantly and football would go back to how it should be.

If the SKY 6 were to all leave the premier league for this new European one I'd say bring 4 extra teams up from the championship. have 18 teams in top division, 20 in the championship and then the others below as they were.

And if it was to happen make sure they sign an agreement which means under no circumstances they can return.

It will just be a revamped Champions League. The elite teams will just be included every year regardless of their league placing.
These elite teams of course will be the ones who can draw the biggest over seas audiences. Asia, Middle East etc.

The also-rans (that’s us) will be given our own little competition to play in that we obviously have to qualify for via league placement and will have no invite into the more prestigious and of course richer competition.

Maybe bring Celtic and Rangers in, but controversial like, but they have the support. Agree with the, never let them back in statement though, because after the initial few years, I could see quite a few of them crawling back, tail between their legs.

European Super League: Fifa says it would ban players from the World Cup

Infantino said it was Fifa's duty to "protect football"
Players involved in any European Super League would be banned from playing international football, including the World Cup, says Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

German publication Der Spiegel claimed top European clubs held secret talks to create a such a set-up by 2021.
The news magazine said leaked documents revealed clubs' plans to leave their national leagues and associations.
Infantino said it was Fifa's duty to "protect football".

He also said Fifa's own plans for a Club World Cup was "the answer to any attempt to break away from the leagues" because it would "generate much more revenues for the clubs but also much more revenues for solidarity".

"We have seen for many years these attempts to break away outside of the structures, going back to the 1990s," he added.
"You are either in or you are out. If there are players who don't play organised football then that encompasses everything - national leagues, confederation competitions, the Euros and the World Cup.
"It is up to us to protect football and come up with solutions that benefit clubs and also the world football community."

'We saved the system'
Der Spiegel also said the documents it obtained showed Manchester City and Paris St-Germain overvalued sponsorship deals to help meet Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules.
It alleged that in 2014 the clubs negotiated with Infantino, who was then general secretary of Uefa, to agree reduced punishments.
City have said they will not be commenting on the claims. Paris St-Germain have been contacted for a response.

Addressing the claims, Infantino said: "We were doing our job and saved the system and we saved European club football.
"We worked with the information we had at the time. If new information has come out, I'm sure Uefa will look at it."
