Europe Thread 25/26

One of my housemates when I was at uni gave himself 10,000-1 odds of making sweet, sweet love to Natalie Imbruglia. His argument was that she lived in the UK and if he were to see her out and about he would definitely try and woo her (I have adjusted my language for the swear filter). Whilst I think his odds were longer than 10,000-1, I agreed with him that there was an incredibly small chance that it may happen (nearly thirty years on, I can report that nobody has had to pay out any winnings).

Moral of the story? Yes, it is still possible, if unlikely.
Whilst I don't mind these kinds of comparisons, I'm Torn on this one.

It could be as low as 9th afaik
How does it get to 9th?

From what I've reas, it's currently the top 5 go into the CL. The only way the league gets an extra CL place could be if Villa finish 5th and also win the Europa League (this wouldn't apply if Villa finished 4th and Liverpool finished 5th, for example, it'd only be top 5 in the CL for some odd reason). Also, in the scenario where the top 6 get CL, the EL place which 6th would have got doesn't drop down another place, it gets assigned to a different league (again, for some odd reason).

So essentially you're looking at top 5 in the CL (or potentially 6)

6th place in the EL (as long as Villa don't win the EL and finish 5th)

7th place in the EL (assuming City win the cup, otherwise it would be Chelsea, no matter where they finish)

8th place in the Conference league (as long as Chelsea don't win the cup)

I haven't seen any scenario where European qualification goes down to 9th?

You may be right
I did not know the Europa place is reassigned if the 6th place gets CL
I assumed it dropped down

we had 9 English teams in Europe this season tho

It's actually if they win it and finish 6th.

Everton can forget Champions League and Europa League, we messed it up.

True footballing giants Bournemouth and Brighton will battle it out instead.

Yep, but not all from league placings.

Top 5 went into the CL
6th place went into the EL
Palace won the cup and should have gone into the EL, but because of Textor's multi-club shenanigans they went into the Conference league and Forest, who should have been in the Conference by virtue of finishing 7th (Newcastle having qualified for the CL so the Conference place they won by winning the EFL Cup passed back to the league).

The outlier was that 17th placed Spurs won the Europa League and qualified for CL, giving us 9 European qualifiers this season

We could still theoretically have 10 English teams in Europe this season if Palace and Forest win the European competitions they're playing in, but that shouldn't affect who qualifies for Europe via a league placing.

Taking nine points from the last three would be the response of a side that wants Europe and merits it. If we get more than four, I'll be amazed.

Yes, no faith in us doing it. But at a push we can get 7 points and then see what 55 points gets us.

I suspect we'll finish where we are right now, tbh.

i know i shouldnt, but i have hope
I wouldn't mate.

Bournemouth have a decent run in apart from City but are 4 points ahead of us already. They will take a spot.

Brighton have a run-in you'd kill for and are 2 points ahead of us already. They'll probably take 7th.

Brentford don't have a great run-in, but are 3 points ahead of us with a better goal difference - they might be the most catchable but we'd need to take 7 points and hope that they take no more than 3.

And even then you've got the unknowns of Chelsea, Sunderland, Fulham and even Newcastle.

It's not impossible, but that West Ham result was a killer and it's made us big outsiders. Even 55 points (which I've thought for ages would be just about enough to sneak in) looks 50/50 in terms of it being potentially enough. I think to guarantee qualifying, we'd need to win all 3.

Disapointing return of points, Even 9 points from here is not quiet what I would have been happy with, 60 points is what i would have said was acceptable thats an improvment of 12 on the previous season, should have been achievable.

As things stand right now we're equal with Dyche's best season total of 48 points...achieved with a club in crisis on and off the pitch...and I couldn't make a strong case that we'll definitely surpass it as the other games I could conceivably see us losing.

It's been a terrible return on £110M expended on players and the backing of an extra 12,000 fans this season.

Appalling really.

🤷‍♂️
