Europe Thread 25/26

The highest we will finish is 8th.

I really hope the powers that be take a long hard look at last summer’s recruitment, as the failure to strengthen adequately at fullback and up front will be what costs us a place in Europe. Out of the six transfers and two loans we made in the summer transfer window, only one transfer (KDH) and one loan (Grealish) could be considered a success. We spent over half our outlay on a striker who has managed six goals, and a winger who has played 350 minutes of football and produced nothing.

We need to be achieving a far better return on our transfer business if we ever want to finish much higher than 8th, or God forbid, actually win something.

The fact we’re sat here talking about our Europe League chances when we have Beto & Barry up top and zero full-backs in the squad is quite remarkable.

Or a damning spotlight shone on the quality of the PL.
A little from Column A and a little from Column B

On paper, this is a very winnable game on Saturday. Stay pragmatic, do the basics right, and we should get the job done.

If we turn up focused and disciplined, we win. If we drift into that casual, “it’ll sort itself out” mindset, don’t be surprised if the whole thing fizzles out with no one really taking responsibility.

Saturday will tell us which version of this team we actually are.

Europe league place is going to be contested like never before.

Brighton in 6th on 50 points, with Bournemouth and Chelsea 1 and 2 points behind respectively. Us and Brentford with a game in hand and 2 and 3 points off 6th respectively, and you absolutely cannot count out any of Sunderland, Fulham or even Palace.

That's 8 teams likely all thinking they can secure 6th.

Hopefully we'll see a FA Cup final of City and Chelsea to increase the odds of 7th also being Europa League.

I think we will need at least 10 points from 5 games to finish 7th due to our hit and miss form. Brighton are flying, whereas Brentford have stalled with 5 draws in a row.

Agree we'll need at least 10 points for Europa League and probably around 7 or 8 for the Conference thingy

I really CBA watching us struggle to stay up next year due to playing some Croatian side who finished 9th in their division this season. Let's be honest, even if we got into the Conference League we'd find a way to mess up against some amateur outfit.

….with it all being so close, momentum could be key and I fear the manner of the Derby defeat might see us running out of gas as we head into the final furlong.

We’ll know a lot more after the West Ham game.
I'm not sure, we've had a weird season, losing games we've been favourites for and winning unexpected games. We played rubbish in the second half of the derby so we shouldn't really be too down that it took them until the 98th minute to score.

If the last two games weren’t decisive, it feels like the next two will be: one team fighting for their lives at the foot of the table and another at the other end most likely easing past a right bunch of chokers to yet another title.
