European leaders have come to a 27-nation consensus that a “hard Brexit” is likely to be the only way to see off future populist insurgencies, which could lead to the break-up of the European Union.
The hardening line in EU capitals comes as Nigel Farage warns European leaders that Marine Le Pen, leader of the Front National, could deliver a political sensation bigger than Brexit and win France’s presidential election next spring – a result that would mean it was “game over” for 60 years of EU integration.
According to senior officials at the highest levels of European governments, allowing Britain favourable terms of exit could represent an existential danger to the EU, since it would encourage similar demands from other countries with significant Eurosceptic movements.
One top EU diplomat told the Observer: “If you British are not prepared to compromise on free movement, the only way to deal with Brexit is hard Brexit. Otherwise we would be seen to be giving in to a country that is leaving. That would be fatal.
The latest intervention by Farage will only serve to fuel fears in Europe that anti-EU movements have acquired a dangerous momentum in countries such as France and the Netherlands, following the precedent set by the Brexit vote. Ukip’s interim leader, who predicted both the vote for Brexit and Donald Trump’s US victory, told the Observer that while Le Pen was still more likely to be runner-up to an establishment candidate next May, she now had to be taken seriously as a potential head of state.

Why can't they compromise on free movement of people? It's madness.
Free movement of people could be the collapse of the EU.
If that's the case what's the point of our government debating Brexit?
You can ask for the world and compromise and they have already made their minds up in the EU if it's falling apart do we really want to be in an EU with changing leaders Italy by the way is the next concern for the EU not us does that article just tell you we are propping it up restricting our trade in the rest of the world?
The elections next year will see off the EU before we even leave, the USA can offer us trade once we leave the EU should just be a trading block not a political union end of!

Not really a shock is it. Instead of compromising and changing the EU to allay legitimate fears that a lot of Europeans have, they will make one last power play to show that the empire is still alive and kicking.
It's a natural reaction to hold on to something tighter when you feel it slipping away from you. A lot of careers are EU dependant, it would be like turkeys voting for Xmas if they didn't try and force through a hard brexit. (If core changes to the EU are off the table)

So the E U s so unpopular that a number of countries would skedaddle were Brexiy to prove relatively pain free?

So with the single market and customs union trade between EU countries is tariff free but there are tarriffs/barriers for countries outside the EU to trade with the EU. Similarly with movement of people anyone can move between EU countries but anyone wanting to move from a country outside the EU to within the EU will find it near impossible?
Can you see why I (a Corbyn admirer who would like to see an end to the obviously failing current global corporation-driven neoliberal economic and political system) can't see why the EU has managed to get labelled as a bastion of goodness and tolerance and wealth distribution while Brexit voters like myself (who would prefer us to treat all countries and people with equal value) are labelled racist, intolerant and right-wing?
Fairness to all and let's have whatever immigration we do have open to all regardless of country of origin and skin colour.

I think that sums it all up really. Instead of being something you freely want to belong to, the Eu has now become this big beast which threatens you if you find its empire building vision does not fit your own. This attitude will destroy the EU. We should get out as quickly as possible......
WOW, seriously. I'm so happy I voted leave, to think these are the bullies we've been run by, like little kids taking their football home because they're losing the game.
What do they think the people of the rest of Europe will think of this.
