Everyone expected a hit to our economy, Remainers kept banging on about London getting pushed out of its financial lead, millions of jobs would be moved to the EU and we would fall off a cliff. None of it happened…..

Its worth noting that the UK has only just begun to implement ‘Brexit’ in terms of actual checks on imports, and it will be at least the end of this year before they are fully implemented.

Dragging out the actual doing of our great new opportunities and control around imports and exports is a deliberate act to make people think that Brexit is done and dusted, far from it.

They get to jump out of power, blame the electorate for not liking sunak for some reason (they chose truss remember) and then roll the full brexit crap-storm into labours lap. I wonder how many extra votes labour would get with a manifesto headline of 'we'll prosecute the brexit liars'.

So us leaving the EU brought the EU down, what about Japan did Brexit put them into recession as well. Or perhaps Covid, the money spent on it, inflation, wfh, etc etc may just have played a part. What about the times the U.K. and others had recessions over the last 50 years while we were in the EU, must have been the threat of Brexit I suppose……
It is an interconnected system, Pete.

We might not be the major concern for Japan but have a look at this https://www.jcer.or.jp/english/brexits-impact-on-the-japanese-economy

But at least it’s under our own control…..

Two things from that. Firstly the ‘experts’ expected up to a 9.5% reduction in U.K. GDP, I said I’d live with 10% but it’s been nothing like that. Secondly, if the report is true then Brexit is the reason Germany overtook Japan. Other than holidaymakers having to show passports I’m still looking for this financial cliff edge……

Why is the argument for Brexit always 'but, what about them'.

Says a lot about the benefits of Brexit for the UK, that the only argument is that there are other countries also in poor health.

At the end of the day Brexit has been a disaster, the forward planning was non-existent. Could have Brexit worked, of course it could have, but before the vote all remainers said was that it wasn't going to work and it has been proved correct.

Maybe but it was such Tory ideation Brexit, they will own this for ever more.

You have to have a comparator in our post Brexit/Covid environment otherwise how do you know what todays normal is. Comparison with Europes major economies has always been done. You say Brexit hasn’t worked, others saying it’s a disaster and Remainers getting really upset because the U.K. is doing ok. So against the two largest EU economies how are we doing ?……

Reflecting on Brexit, Pete, it's clear that a truthful referendum, unclouded by misleading information, would almost certainly have yielded a different outcome.

The repercussions of that vote extend beyond just the economy, impacting both macro as well as micro factors. Many who were persuaded to vote for leaving now see the drawbacks. Exporters, farmers, fishermen and SMEs across the country are all facing livelihood threatening challenges because of border issues and new import export realities.

Figures like Rees Mogg and Farage profited by shorting the pound, leaving the man on the street to bear the brunt, and lets be honest, that's what it was really about. Benefitting a few and in doing so making life worse for the many.

You can even see certain traumas on GOT, for example, the ridiculous situation of families with a British partner and foreign spouse confronted with post-Brexit uncertainties and being told that they cant come home! A situation that is quite frankly nonsensical. The xenophobia drummed up by the Brexiteers is a disgrace that has caused serious societal issues. The Brexiteers have pushed us into a toxic position that is going to take some healing and education to move away from.

I think its fair and reasonable to say that Brexit is more of an ill-thought-out mess than a well-executed plan, and if you can't see that the cliff edge was the vote then you clearly had your eyes shut.

Honestly, I am not intelligent enough to read into the specifics. I am only commenting on the fact, that the argument seems to be 'Yeah, but what about them'. The argument, for the country doing well, seems to be very rarely directly talking about the population of the UK. The common person on the street, the people who used to benefit from freedom of movement, being in the single market, etc.

Are there stats out there comparing life for these people before and after, is there a graph for people who have benefitted compared to those who are worse off. Not country vs country but UK vs UK. Covid and Ukraine do muddy the waters and it would take a deep dive into each individual case to see what was the main factor in change but it still stands that this is what we should be comparing.

What a convenient system you have chosen. I wonder, why did it not occur to compare say, erm, britain before and britain after brexit.
