“The UK is expected to become the first non-founding member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), giving businesses easier access to tens of millions of middle-class consumers and a $10 trillion market.
The accession will be announced as soon as Friday, a source said, with trade ministers expected to meet on Thursday night to sign it off.
As well as bolstering the British economy, the deal would also be a further statement of intent about Britain's determination to play a role on the global stage after signing the Aukus defence pact with the US and Australia.
Stephanie Rickard, professor of political science at the London School of Economics, said: “The UK is trailblazing. This is changing the agreement from being a regional agreement to a global agreement.”
Shanker Singham, a former trade adviser to the Government, said that CPTPP and Britain combined would have an equal economic weight to the European Union - while the structure of the partnership means any attempt to rejoin the EU would become impossible because of clashing regulations between the two blocs.
He said: "Accession would be a huge triumph for UK negotiators, and for the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Business and International Trade in particular. It would mark the point at which Brexit could not be reversed."
Gerard Lyons, a former adviser to Boris Johnson who is now an economist at Netwealth investment services, said: “This is something that would not have been possible if we were in the EU. Leaving the customs union allows the UK to reposition itself in the changing global economy.“
I must have missed voting for this.

So we still trade with the EU, but additionally will have free trade with the CPTPP. I’ve no doubt when the U.K.-USA FTA is done you’ll all be complaining about that as well. Get real guys, the EU is a protectionist and Political bloc whose share of world GDP falls every year, while the CPTPP will immediately be bigger than the EU when the U.K. formally joins and will continue to grow year on year. You are stuck in a protectionist and out of date mindset of don’t upset the status quo. Those voting remain did so because they are frightened of change and dealing with non-white, non-european peoples around the world…not that I would go so far as to call you racist though. It’s a big world and it’s a smart geopolitical move……
Truly bizarre take.

It's not like we DIDN'T trade with the rest of the world previously.

Fine, it smooths access to another set of trading partners. But the big question is whether: a) will it ameliorate or even exceed the estimated 4% hit to GDP we've seen from Brexit so far (according to the OBR); will we see a detrimental effect on the standards of goods (quite probably) as well have lesser import standards imposed on us by *checks notes* faceless unelected bureaucrats.

It's swings and roundabouts. In all honesty do you think grumbles and complaints will not emerge off the back of joining a new protectionist bloc? Of course they will, when it becomes less beneficial to already very rich people and ordinary folk start blaming it for their woes.

Did the government hand all our data over , was one of the key areas that was stopping us joining the CPTPP, also not a t least Investor-State Dispute Settlement (IDS), a system through which countries can be sued by foreign investors for certain state actions affecting foreign direct investment, most countries are now turning away from this system, something about democracy and sovereignty of a nation.

GIVING UP CONTROL!

GIVING UP CONTROL!

The CPTPP deal will likely mean we get flooded with poor quality goods/foods at the expense of our own standrads and home market. Multinationals will ride roughshod over everything. And all for a tiny tiny GDP value vs the 4% GDP lost from leaving the EU.
Even Trump baulked at joining the CPTPP if I'm remembering correctly... Really is for the thick CPTPP.

When do we get a vote on CPTPPXIT?

I must admit I do love posts like these from @peteblue. I rather fancy he's had a few ales and maybe a cheeky nip of whiskey, whacks out something he knows will get a bite, heads to bed, and gets up to laugh off his hangover at our responses.

The git.

I think we can all agree that Leavers identify with getting out and dealing with Global trade and working with every country and peoples while Remainers snuggle up to their mums and hope nothing ever changes in their cosy little world of being with White Europeans……

Even as a joke this is deluded coming from you tbh.

I'm also 50/50 on this being a joke too.
