EU-integration would be problematic at best, culturally & economically. They're not a full grown democratic state like France or Germany. There's absolutely no question they won't be allowed in in the near future. (it would also be a direct declaration of war to Russia)
They're not a democracy, there are huge corruption problems, not to mention the repression of gay people & the popularity of extreme right poltical movements and so on... The economy is a shambles & would undermine the internal EU market even more with (extremely) cheap labour.
What we think is irrelevant, Russia & Ukraine have a quarrel. Both are, contrary to the baltic states, not in the EU nor in NATO, so we don't meddle. No good can come of it, only tears. No other state (certainly not the US) should arm the other or motivate conflict. This is none of our or the EU's business.
See, this is what I was on about. Ukraine are an independent country; in very few other circumstances would the independent decision of that country, achieved democratically, to join a defensive military alliance or a political union be seen as "an act of war". Ukraine hasn't attacked Russia (the opposite is true), its never occupied Russia (the opposite is true) and they pose no threat to Russia (the opposite is true).
Putin is just trying to act in the traditional Russian way, to put as much distance between Moscow and "the West" as possible - but the problem he has is that the way he is doing it, to try and appear frightening is just spooking those countries they used to administer into seeking assistance. I mean after what happened in 2015 and the years since Ukraine is much more European than it was; its much more anti-Russian than it was. All this buildup of force is not making them pro-Russian, is it? Even if he did invade and did win, what do you think the border of the EU is going to look like? You won't be able to move for Yanks; he'll probably find the EU gets its s**t together in terms of an actual armed force as well.
As for the rest, you can say that about most of Eastern Europe (certainly Poland at the moment) and you can say a lot of it about the UK too.
