You are missing the point. It’s about higher wages in real terms, not nominal terms.

It’s great that people are getting paid more. But if the cost of living is rising higher than your wages then you aren’t better off are you?
Well yes you are. For a start not everything goes up at the same rate. Nearly all countries eith the highest standard of living are high wage economies.

My sister lives in Switzerland, I doubt shed swap lower wages for lower prices

Given that I know nothing about economics can you explain it to me please?

Id like to understand the dynamics at play at the moment?

What’s your base case? What prevents us from falling into a stagflatinary environment? What’s your view on policy risk from a central bank perspective? Real rates being as they are, do you think now is the right time for CBs to move into a more hawkish regime? If they do, what do you think the impact on growth might be? Do you think a lower participation rate is having an effect on labour supply dynamics? What about inflation? How much do you think is transient and supply push and how much do you think is demand driven? How much of the demand we are seeing is driven by the increase in the savings rate last year and how much do you think the consumer will continue to support growth?

You are right mate... let's all stick with lower wages. Much better

That's not what I said. Pay rises are very good but if cost of living gets close or outstrips those - which if there wasn't an energy cap for instance and the supplier just passed on the 200% rise that would have a major knock on effect to everything - then all it does is keep you in around where you were.

At the moment those who have had rises are probably still feeling the benefits, but incrementally those increases are going to feed through the system. When everyone gets a rise businesses have to up their prices to compensate, rent, council tax will presumably go up, the new NI rise will mean around £35 per month will go from my increase from next April and once you tally all those will your quality of life have really gone up from your wage increase?

Certainly have. Got 1 today actually.

But you are right, everyone should believe the nonsense on here about the world ending

my terminally ill mother can’t get the equipment she needs off the nhs due shortages and backlogs caused by brexit.

We don’t have to believe anything in the press because we see the impact it’s having on a daily basis.

You seem to be living in some sort of utopia where everything is perfect since brexit, yet it’s not the experience me and a lot of people I know are having.

Still empty shelves here btw, can I come and stay at yours for a bit? Sounds like a swell place to live.

I don't live in a utopia. And I'm sorry for the issues with yiur mum. How has brexit impacted that? Driver issues etc?

Empty shelves? You actually mean a few empty shelves that hardly has any impact on people's lives

You are living in a fantasy land.

Brexit is a complete and total disaster. Anyone who pretends otherwise is completely deluded and needs to stop absorbing right wing media.

Bore off lad. You have absolutely no idea if it's a disaster or not.

And on that note, think I'll take my leave from this thread. Remainers can carry the thread on

The thing is that all we have from you is how you have benefited, there are so many more who haven't benefited. You cannot judge something so massive on an individual basis, it is impossible.

What I see is overall Brexit has either been pointless or detrimental (in varying degrees). There will be some people/business who it has been a positive but that is something that is irrelevant to the greater whole. COVID has been an excellent thing thing for some businesses/individuals, but would you say that it has been an overwhelming success based on those positive financial stories, the same with Brexit.

Whether the country will come out of it and make it positive for the country, as a whole, is to be seen, but come on do you really trust this government to do that.

If I recall, Armin's company has done okay because Brexit has seen a whole bunch of trade barriers introduced that make buying from their European rivals a pain in the proverbial. Of course, Armin doesn't care that their customers are only buying from them because the government has practically made it the only option. To him, that's a sign of productivity rising and therefore justifying his hike in salary.

Exactly, remove competition, or what people actually want, from the marketplace, and shoddy crap does well with no competition. Who's the winner?
