All my meetings from HMG got cancelled for yesterday. Normally have 3 on a Wednesday to discuss the October and January checks, but removed from calendar at the last minute

There maybe something in this then; it’s an absolute mess how this has been handled. Not one small Port Health authority is ready for the increased checks, they don’t have the physical infrastructure or staff in place due to severe issues with the government releasing funds

Shows a chasm in the approach to preparations really. British government made paltry attempt at preparations presumably in the belief they wouldn't need them as EU would back down etc.

EU made all the necessary preparations in case they were needed.

Trade betwee ROI and NI is booming, more so in a southerly direction as in NI firms are finding new markets. DUP have been on a charm offensive with NI firms over the past couple of months so will be interesting to see what support they get for threatening to bring down Stormont.

Basically, once the referendum results where in we heard border officials at Calais and throughout the Netherlands had went on a bit of a staffing frenzy, in preparation.

We’re now 3 weeks and 1 day away from needing to conduct, albeit with no enforcement action, documentary checks on tens of thousands of products arriving from the EU and there is not enough staff nor have are business fully aware of what to do.

All these issues were fed back to HMG years ago, decisions are still pending on how to deal with certain goods

Who'd have thought this - when it turned out the Vote Leave lot had to run a government!

Really starting to see the shortages hit locally the big Tesco nearby has the veg section half empty more shelves completely empty with advertising or filled with holding stock to make them look fuller. All definitely getting worse maybe accelerating.

Still expect government will be forced to make a uturn of some kind on visas, but it will be as late as possible, extending the problem way more than it needs.

@arminisgod you mentioned the other day about the low pay of migrants. This is a good example

This lady is a pharmacist but her qualifications aren't recognised here so she created a business instead (startup/self-employment rates are significantly higher among migrants for this very reason). Perhaps if we did a better job of recognising the credentials people have they wouldn't have to do other things? A Brazilian friend of ours, for instance, is a doctor but to practice in the NHS would mean doing medical school all over again, so to support his family he works in sales. He's done very well like, but it would surely be a better contribution to society if he practiced medicine instead?
