Nightmare isn't it, luckily we came out about square due to Euros that were owed to us but I import a lot of parts from Spain and Germany and it's killing me ATM. We get some parts made in Kirkby but they are short of skilled engineers to make any more.

The skill shortage in Britain is a huge capacity constraint forcing manufacturers, assemblers etc to import rather than use UK made components. Now this has been a problem for many years and ignored largely by Governments of all persuasions but if components are too expensive to import, we don't have enough skilled workers of our own and immigration is about to get tougher where does that leave us? The only solution is enormous investment in training and apprentices, but I don't see a May led Government doing that.

I feel for you but it's great for exporters and will probably mean the UK attracts far more foreign investment which long term will be better for everyone. Swings and roundabouts.

The primary reason for large scale foreign investment was that we were a platform to launch products manufactured here into the single market of Europe. Given we are leaving the single market and do not know what basis we will be trading with Europe in the future, and are unlikely to know until the conclusion of talks (possibly not until March 2019) how does that assist future foreign investment?

Because we sell to a global market and if the pound is low relative to other currencies then it makes investing here more attractive.

To answer your question we don't know for sure. In many ways we are taking our first steps as a new independent country and while that is scary and there are negatives it remains to be seen whether the negatives will out way the positives but generally a weak currency helps our competitiveness.

The country benefits because of what we can import, not because of what we can export, and as we currently import significantly more than we export, how is making imports more expensive a good thing?

But it also increases costs as we are discussing given that all that we export is not totally made in the UK. It also reduces the value of the investments previous foreign investors have made either in our economy or in purchasing British Gilts. It is by no means a panacea, a get out of jail free card.

It is a reflection of the relative strength of the UK economy looking forward and the associated risks of investing currently in UK PLC. It gives companies with overseas earnings a short term boost (as seen by the rise in FTSE) but medium to long term does nothing for the country as a whole.

You know it won't actually be May and Merkel in a room alone together, don't you?
doesnt matter May is respecting the OUT vote I suppose they will have 27 others all there have to agree on every proposal utter farce the EU!

I suspect it could be the hardest of hard Brexits as the EU won't be able to come to a decision. A hard Brexit that will hurt us short term but hurt them more and one that we will move on from but could cause the dissolution of the entire EU.

That would for me be a great accomplishment it's run about as well as FIFA and our FA!
