But each removal of barriers to trade requires the country to give up some sovereignty and independence. That's the whole nature of this. That's why the Tories are banging that particular drum because even with a trade deal with the EU it will be the only one in history that makes both parties poorer and trade between both parties harder. All so the UK can say that it's "sovereign".
That's the absurdity of it, especially when you readily admit to be willing to give up sovereignty as part of WTO membership. Heck, the WTO even provide independent arbitration in the event of disputes, despite Brexiters wanting full control for British courts in all matters British. The WTO is also horribly out of date, with no meaningful changes made since 1995, so it's scarcely believable that any nation would voluntarily trade on those terms, but especially so one that likes to think of itself as cutting edge.
I don’t want British courts to be adjudicating on trade matters between ourselves and another country, nor do I want the EU court adjudicating on trade matters between the U.K. and the EU.
I agree that the WTO needs updating. While you believe in completely open borders for people, I happen to believe in completely open borders for trade. I would like to see FTA’s with everyone including the EU and not the protectionist racket that the EU has become......
