@peteblue I know you struggled with suggestions yesterday that prejudice has anything to do with Brexit. The poster below is from the National Front in the 70s. Their policy aims finally seem to be coming true.

The Common Market was a good thing and would be again today. I happen to agree with restoring capital punishment. Overseas Aid when done properly benefits both the target country and the U.K., wasting overseas aid undermines its need. I also happen to believe in having credible Armed Forces.

This 50 year older poster is really about immigration, the rest of it put in to appeal in parts to many folk. The National Front gained a total of less than 12,000 votes nationally in 1970, in 2015 they gained a total of just over 1,000 across the whole country. The U.K. is not a racist country no matter how hard people with an agenda try to paint it.

Leave gained 17,400,000 votes, so to even suggest that voting Leave is in anyway linked or associated with the disgraceful neanderthals who gained fewer votes than I had pints of beer last year is wrong, and that’s what I object to........

Why would you need to vote for the National Front when you can just vote Conservative instead and get the same outcome?

The Conservatives are not against immigration, but are for controlled immigration I believe. But should this not be in one of the many anti-conservative threads that we have, as it has nothing to do with the current state of play in U.K.-EU relationships or trade...

The saddest thing about this is, that you are kinda always under the naive impression that we are developing. That we are learning from mistakes and are looking to become a more tolerant and progressive society. Instead history is simply repeating itself ‘first as a tragedy and then as a farce’
I wonder if the propositions on that NF poster are more mainstream now than in 1970.

They've always been the same...

Free to trade with the RotW you say? Good job.

So on summary, cabotage is [Poor language removed], unaccompanied loads have been forgotten about, the only Port in the UK with any semblance of reasonable access is Dover/Folkestone but are highly tuned to post TIR freight movements, rail freight is limited, our container capacity is stretched and the marshalling yards are being constructed on a marsh and won't be ready until spring.

... brilliant!

@nsno-chris how are we looking for January?

You seemed confused as to why people regarded the Brexit vote as having racist undertones, so I thought the crossover with the National Front was relevant. I'm afraid the hostile environment very much suggests that the Tories are, if they're not overtly against immigration, are certainly pandering to the basest instincts of those who might have supported the messaging outlined in the NF poster.

So it'll come down to who fills their kecks first and by how much come January, and then how much damage they are willing to inflict on a fatigued population battered by a once in a century plague and ongoing economic upheaval, many of whom hadn't even recovered from the last recession. Great... easiest deal in history apparently. But at least Brexit will be done eh?

I doubt it....
