We have nothing to prove. Life has moved on in a myriad of ways, COVID is changing the U.K. and the EU, we now have to work out how to grow the economy again. The EU will have its own problems but at least we will not be subsidising them. We will rebuild our economy faster than the EU sorts out theirs.....

Depends what you mean by ‘we’ and to who you don’t have things to prove.

There are millions of people who voted leave on the promise of a better future for them and their loved ones in the UK. It is not acceptable for those people to have nothing but abstract statements about ‘freedom’ fed to them going forward.

Covid is not an excuse either. All countries are in that boat, and we have already seen indications that withdrawal from the EU has negatively impacted our response in that regard.

Gove, Raab, Mogg et al must now start delivering the milk and honey from this new land they promised.

We no longer have to follow EU law and if we don’t like the laws our government produce we can just vote them out. We could not vote out the EU commission, any of its Presidents nor it’s Parliament. We can do trade deals with whoever we wish, on terms that suit both parties and not have to compromise with an additional 27 countries. I could go on but we have covered this many many times....
Who voted for Tony Abbott and how can I have a say in getting rid of him please?

This pandemic has come at the perfect time for these incompetent tories. They will shift the blame as they usually do when leaving the EU will become an unmitigated disaster. Nothing is ever their fault.

We do Pete. For four months more, and then we'll have adopted any changes to legislation this year if their enacting powers fall before 31 December 2020. A new round of SIs in the new year will see to that.

This is the core problem here - you have no idea what you have voted for.

Gertrude has been upgraded, so we better watch out...

Good article, undos the myths around people just wanting to come to the UK, with links within article..

And I totally agree....

No Pete. The onus is on those who supported leave to prove it is beneficial at this point.

Everything you said above about the political constraints being lifted is meaningless if it doesn’t actually improve the lives of the citizens of the UK.

Our vote to leave does exactly that. It puts the spotlight on our own politicians to perform, without the ready made excuse of pointing at some bogeyman in the EU, and if they don’t improve our lives as they should we have the power to sack them....

the drawback to your point timing wise is we appear to have entered a time of zero accountability, it doesn’t seem to matter what anybody does any more . politicians, of all colours , pretty much just deflect and double down now unfortunately.

For far too long, politicians and the heads of our public services have gotten away scot-free for any shambles they have created, while senior people in the private sector always pay the price of failure with their jobs. This will no longer be possible nor acceptable, someone has to pay the price. Recently that cretin Williamson has clung to his job, but at least one or two quango or department heads have paid the price (even though they will no doubt pop up again somewhere within the public sector). We need renewal throughout the top layers of our public ‘servants’ and Politicians, who have progressively become more useless as each decade goes by......

I think it’s worse now than ever to be honest
