when the UK fishing quotas were put out to tender most of them went to EU companies, not sure how long they were for but as of this minute in time , the UK quota is in fact mainly EU.

The full fact article I linked to above suggested that the quotas were based on 1970s fishing levels for each EU territory, but this is up for negotiation in 2022. Until that point though, the UK were the 2nd biggest fishers in the EU, which doesn't suggest they're doing that badly.

Doesn't the international convention of the sea thing restrict how much fishing can be done?

Its not just how much but how it’s done, size of netting, disturbance of the sea floor etc. For instance, the Dutch method of electric current doesn’t recognise the size of a fish. The Eu has differing countries wanting differing methods. Once out we can at least determine the single best policy and regulations for our fishing grounds.....

It's been banned by the EU

Not until 2021. But you get my point, regulating for conservation over our own fishing grounds is a sensible move. If we make a mess of it then there is no one else to blame.......

As with the convention of the seas though, surely management of the seas has to be an international, cooperative endeavour. Fish don't get checked for nationality as they swim between borders. The only sensible way forward is to govern collectively.

And that’s fine Bruce, but unfortunately the EU has competing countries and always ends up with a compromise solution, hence why Holland is still electrifying fish. Once out of the EU we will have a voice the equal of the EU and not 1/28th.....

Just a shame UK governments has always allowed foreign fishermen have the right to exploit UK waters because UK law allows UK fishermen to sell their quota rights to the highest bidder. We are the only EU member state that permits this selll off.

More or less guaranteed our fishing waters will be traded off for some form access to financial services, after all the bankers and fund managers have lifestyles to maintain.

That and financial services is far and away our biggest industry. 1.1 million work in the sector, which makes it a touch more important than a sector that employs 10,000. What's the saying? For the many, not the few?

Your logic applies if we all have the lifestyles of the average banker and hedge fund manager no matter the industry we work in...
Our fishing will be sacrificed for the financial industry, further putting all our economic eggs in the same basket.
